Exer – More Than Urgent Care

What if there was one place you could go for your family’s immediate heath care needs? Now there is!

I have been there personally and received excellent care! Exer – More Than Urgent Care clinics are staffed by ER doctors but don’t have the wait or expense of the hospital ER. They can take care of any non-life-threatening condition, from the common cold to broken bones. Open 9am-9pm every day in Calabasas, Newbury Park and Beverly Hills, they accept all PPO insurance plans. No appointment is necessary, just walk in to be seen. Save their locations at www.ExerUrgentCare.com/locations to your phone now for when the need comes up!

Play and Grow Smart-er Tips

Nancy Pyne-Hapke, author of “Play and Grow Smart, A Guide Supporting Brain Development, Birth through Five,” has been giving tips to aid your child’s optimum skill development through proactive neuroscience-based activities every Monday.  These ideas come from scholarly sources to personal interviews, from the internet to periodicals to books.

“AUDITORY” DEVELOPMENTAL SKILL DEFINITION: distinguishing similarities and differences between sounds, integrating hearing with the act of listening, remembering the order of sounds, learning verbal communication.

THE ‘CRITICAL WINDOW’ during which the circuits of the brain are being most heavily wired for the “AUDITORY” sense is from prenatal.  The more opportunity children have for positive “Auditory” (sound) experiences during this critical period, the more efficiently their brains will work over the long run.

More general AUDITORY tidbits:

* RESEARCH SHOWS that the type of music children are exposed to influences EMOTIONAL brain development:

….banging, loud, chaotic sounds like metal, rap, ska and punk are stress-producing.

….melodic and more easy-listening music like “children’s music,” classical, smooth jazz, Hawaiian music and meditation music support healthy developing emotional and attitudinal tolerances.

* MAKE TIME FOR QUIET for your child to get away from the action like after high stimulation and before nap time and bedtime.

* NOTE THAT children are soothed/calmed differently – some by melodic, low-volume, sleepy background music and some by silence or “white noise.”

Next week – “Auditory,” Pt. 6
