Eat See Hear Santa Monica: Movies, Live Music & Food Trucks

Spring and summer nights in L.A. are all about staying outdoors as long as you can, enjoying the great weather and good friends. Eat|See|Hear Movies puts together the ultimate nighttime outdoor hangout, combining popular films with live indie bands and some of the city’s most famous food trucks. The Santa Monica screenings take advantage of the Westside sea breezes, rolling the largest outdoor movie screen west of the Mississippi into SAMO High School for screenings of everyone’s favorite movies along with live performances by up-and-coming bands. As always, a variety of the city’s best food trucks will be on hand to dish out food, offering up a variety of choices from around the world.

Turn a “project” into lunch

Here’s a concept with infinite variations. Prep whatever vegetables your kids will eat (thinly sliced raw colorful bell peppers, carrots, sweet onion, snow peas, celery, jicama, zucchini, bean sprouts, cucumber, cabbage, avocado, tomato; chopped parsley, cilantro, basil, mint, etc.), and set out on individual (paper?) plates along with optional thinly sliced charcuterie/deli meats and any kind of leftovers that would be good cold. Prep dry rice paper sheets (soak for 30 sec, place on clean cloth). Let the kids put what they want in the center of the sheets, and fold/tuck/roll. They’ll learn soon enough how much will fit comfortably on a sheet and still have enough rice paper to fold. (Photo tutorial, http://whiteonricecouple.com/recipes/how-roll-fresh-spring-rolls/.) Serve with a dip like sweet chili sauce, flavored hummus, peanut sauce or DIY pesto. For the health-conscious, avoid high-calorie dressings. If the kids are too young to prep the veges themselves, have everything ready (mis en place) before you let them loose in the kitchen for this delicious experience.

Hmm, then there’s filling the rice paper with sliced apples, pears, bananas (the long way) and dipping in peanut butter/chocolate sauce or thinned-out honey.
