Play and Grow Smart-er Tips Nancy Pyne-Hapke, author of “Play and Grow Smart, A Guide Supporting Brain Development, Birth through Five,” has been giving tips to aid your child’s optimum skill development through proactive neuroscience-based activities every Monday. These ideas come from scholarly sources to personal interviews, from the internet to periodicals to books. “LANGUAGE/VOCABULARY” DEVELOPMENTAL SKILL DEFINITION: developing communications skills; articulating thoughts, feelings, needs; speaking, listening, reading, comprehending, writing, and spelling. THE CRITICAL WINDOW during which the circuits of the brain are being most heavily wired for LANGUAGE/VOCABULARY: “Vocabulary” development is 2 years through adult. The more opportunity children have for positive language/vocabulary experiences during this critical period, the more efficiently their brains will work over the long run. SOME DEVELOPMENTAL Language/Vocabulary: “Vocabulary,” Pt. 14, tidbits for the reading/literacy experience with your Toddler/Preschooler/Kindergartener focused on building a strong foundation for reading and literacy: WATCH your child .. begin to write, .. practice his own name, .. make labels, .. make lists, .. make a transcript of his own speech. ** Use FAT pencils and crayons thru 1st grade; it’s more manageable for fine motor finger movement and brings easier successes. ** Pay attention to using lower case letters and capital letters correctly. For example, in a name, use a capital letter ONLY for the first letter. ** Make sure strokes to create letters are from the top down, not from the bottom up (think “a ball drops down from above; it doesn’t fly up from below”). After having fun pounding skinless/boneless thighs (no to breast here), marinate (garlic/scallions/ginger/soy/Korean malt syrup/sugar/toasted sesame oil/pepper) for a few hours (see comments).
