Take your Kids to See a Mary Poppins Sing-a-Long at El Capitan

Especially if you saw “Saving Mr. Banks”, it’s time to take your kids to experience this Disney classic in the ultimate fashion — at Hollywood’s elegant El Capitan Theatre, a beautifully restored 1926 movie palace with a state-of-the-art sound system. There will be on-screen lyrics so the whole family can sing along with Mary, Bert and the gang during this magical 1964 musical starring Dick Van Dyke and Julie Andrews (who won an Oscar for her role) as the nanny who’s “practically perfect in every way.” Top off this unforgettable experience by coming dressed as your favorite character. And every ticket includes a complimentary box of popcorn.

Play and Grow Smart-er Tips

Nancy Pyne-Hapke, author of “Play and Grow Smart, A Guide Supporting Brain Development, Birth through Five,” has been giving tips to aid your child’s optimum skill development through proactive neuroscience-based activities every Monday.  These ideas come from scholarly sources to personal interviews, from the internet to periodicals to books.

“LANGUAGE/VOCABULARY” DEVELOPMENTAL SKILL DEFINITION: developing communications skills; articulating thoughts, feelings, needs; speaking, listening, reading, comprehending, writing, and spelling.

THE CRITICAL WINDOW during which the circuits of the brain are being most heavily wired for LANGUAGE/VOCABULARY: “Vocabulary” development is 2 years through adult. The more opportunity children have for positive language/vocabulary experiences during this critical period, the more efficiently their brains will work over the long run.

Some Language/Vocabulary: “Vocabulary,” Pt. 7 tidbits for building a strong foundation for reading and literacy:

By 3 years old, Toddler

*  ENJOYS repeating words and sounds.

*  TELLS simple stories from pictures or books.

*  WITH YOUR ENCOURAGEMENT continues to count everything (remember to count both forward and backward), name all things, and discuss the goings-on.

Next week – Language/Vocabulary: “Vocabulary,” Pt. 8
