TOTEM by Cirque du Soleil: Experience Man’s Journey on Earth

Experience an amazing night of the high-flying feats and stunning imagery that Cirque du Soleil is famous for when TOTEM stops in at the Santa Monica Pier. TOTEM traces the journey of the human race from amphibian beginnings all the way into the future, imagining the realization of our ultimate desire to fly. Set on a stage inspired by the giant turtle, which represents Earth’s origins in many ancient civilizations, and drawing inspiration from various creation myths, TOTEM’s characters evolve through mind-blowing acrobatics and stunning visual displays, exploring the ties between all of Earth’s species and the dreams and infinite potential of humanity. Play and Grow Smart-er Tips

Nancy Pyne-Hapke, author of “Play and Grow Smart, A Guide Supporting Brain Development, Birth through Five,” has been giving tips to aid your child’s optimum skill development through proactive neuroscience-based activities every Monday.  These ideas come from scholarly sources to personal interviews, from the internet to periodicals to books.

“LANGUAGE/VOCABULARY” DEVELOPMENTAL SKILL DEFINITION: developing communications skills; articulating thoughts, feelings, needs; speaking, listening, reading, comprehending, writing, and spelling.

THE CRITICAL WINDOW during which the circuits of the brain are being most heavily wired for LANGUAGE/VOCABULARY: “Vocabulary” development is 2 years through adult. The more opportunity children have for positive language/vocabulary experiences during this critical period, the more efficiently their brains will work over the long run.

Some Language/Vocabulary: “Vocabulary,” Pt. 1 tidbits for building a strong foundation for reading and literacy:

FROM 24 – 30 months, Toddler likely

*  SAYS her own name and the names of everyone in the family.

*  SAYS new words, possibly without knowing their meaning.

*  POINTS to body parts on himself or dolls.

*  STARTS talking about herself – what she likes and doesn’t, what she thinks and feels.

Next week – Language/Vocabulary: “Vocabulary,” Pt. 2

Your Jr. Chef can make Roasted Carrot Soup

Creamy, rich flavor. Roast/broil cut carrots. To good-quality veg stock, add a piece of ginger, sprig of thyme, browned onion, chopped garlic, softened/browned carrots. After simmering, blend and stir in s&p. Garnish with chopped fresh thyme. Parental supervision. Comments say it’s even better the next day, suggest incorporating cooked sweet potato/splash of balsamic, and top with Greek yogurt or sour cream.

Daycare Lead

Recommended by Jens List member hagitdno@gmail.com

I have been sending my son to Shula’s Daycare in Calabasas for 18 months now since he turned one. Shula is the most caring, loving, responsible and thoughtful teacher. I wish I have had her for my two older kids! Shula treats the children as if they are her own. She keeps them active and engaged with songs, stories, creative arts projects, outdoor play and holiday celebrations. She serves the kids delicious homemade kosher meals and has a beautiful and safe yard for the children to play. If you are looking for a daycare that loves kids, treats them with respect and warmth, and is safe, clean and educational.”
