Play and Grow Smart-er Tips

Nancy Pyne-Hapke, author of “Play and Grow Smart, A Guide Supporting Brain Development, Birth through Five,” has been giving tips to aid your child’s optimum skill development through proactive neuroscience-based activities every Sunday. These ideas come from scholarly sources to personal interviews, from the internet to periodicals to books.

DEVELOPMENTAL Skill Definition, “LANGUAGE/VOCABULARY:” developing communications skills; articulating thoughts, feelings, needs; speaking, listening, reading, comprehending, writing, and spelling.

THE CRITICAL WINDOW during which the circuits of the brain are being most heavily wired for “Language/Vocabulary: Native Language, Recognition Of Speech” development is birth to 5 years. The more opportunity children have for positive Language/Vocabulary experiences during this critical period, the more efficiently their brains will work over the long run.

Some “NATIVE LANGUAGE, RECOGNITION OF SPEECH” Pt. 2 tidbits:

*  SINCE RESEARCH SHOWS that children whose parents spoke to them extensively as babies have significantly higher IQs and richer vocabularies than other children, talk to Baby all the time.

*  TALK, if you have the skill, in multiple languages to help foster Baby’s ability to hear sounds necessary to speak more than 1 language.

*  INCREASING language skills might also encourage cooperation – make dressing time more interesting by pointing to and identifying the name of items of clothing or body parts, like “See this warm, red coat? Your arms go into the long sleeves.” “See this soft, blue cap? It goes on your head!”

Next week – Language/Vocabulary: “Native Language, Recognition of Speech,” Pt. 3

Pleygo

Families can now rent or trade rather than own Lego sets, making it possible for kids of all ages to build their favorite Legos without having to actually purchase them. By swapping Lego sets, parents save money and kids continue to be excited and long for the new set that comes in the mail. All Plegyo sets are guaranteed to come completely ready to play with all the pieces and full building instructions. Every set is cleaned and sanitized between each use to ensure it is safe and ready to play as soon as it arrives at the door. Lego sets continue to be one of the most popular toys among kids of all ages with 72% of families in the US owning at least one set. Lego has been proven to help children to develop their imagination, concentration and problem solving skills.

DIY hors d’oeuvres or savory cheese-studded, mini-creampuff pastry

Bake, split and stuff like sandwiches. Called gougères, and a close cousin to choux paste. Options to add to batter: cayenne, smoked paprika, garlic chives, alt firm grated cheeses (sharp cheddar, smoked options, Comté, Emmenthal), 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg, crumbled drained chorizo. Fillings can include bacon/arugula/pickled onions (simple recipe on page), crab salad, curried chicken salad, ham/cheese. Can easily be frozen just before baking and made fresh from frozen with a couple add’l min added to baking time.

Your Jr. Chef can make 5-minute No-bake Vegan Granola Bars

Basically, mix/refrigerate/wrap/enjoy. Oats, pepitas, raisins, nut butter, agave nectar/brown rice syrup/coconut nectar, salt. Comments suggest dry-toasting oats, pepitas. Can add/sub all sorts of things – tahini, dried cranberries/cherries/blueberries, chopped dried fruit slices/dates, chocolate chips, cinnamon, flax seed meal, chopped nuts. The best wet/dry ratio is just enough wet to make everything barely stick together. Experiment with different ingredient combinations (2-3 strong flavors together are about right) – what fun! Parental supervision.

Halloween Costumes Should be Scary, Not Nighttime Drivers

Trick or treat night poses a very real danger to kids who might not be seen by drivers as they dart from house to house. Many believe wearing light-colored clothing is enough to make pedestrians visible to drivers, but even if children are dressed up as white ghosts or angels, it can be difficult for drivers to see them at night. Keep children safe while trick or treating by illuminating them with reflective material, such as LunaTagz™, which reflect light from over 1,000 feet away. Crafted from a specially formulated adhesive and made with genuine 3M™ Scotchlite™ Reflective Material, LunaTagz™ come in an array of fun, Halloween designs and can be applied to nearly any surface.
