Play and Grow Smart-er Tips

Nancy Pyne-Hapke, author of “Play and Grow Smart, A Guide Supporting Brain Development, Birth through Five,” has been giving tips to aid your child’s optimum skill development through proactive neuroscience-based activities every Monday. These ideas come from scholarly sources to personal interviews, from the internet to periodicals to books.

DEVELOPMENTAL Skill Definition, SOCIAL/EMOTIONAL: bonding, building relationships, appreciating differences, self-esteem, self-expression, responsibility, self-reliance, resourcefulness, curiosity, motivation, persistence, self-control.

THE CRITICAL WINDOW during which the circuits of the brain are being most heavily wired for “SOCIAL/EMOTIONAL: STRESS RESPONSE” development is birth to about 3 years. The more opportunity children have for positive social-emotional experiences during this critical period, the more efficiently their brains will work over the long run.

Some Social/Emotional: STRESS RESPONSE tidbits:

*  “CONTROL tantrums” come from a more sophisticated part of the brain, usually with a demanding “I want” attitude. Giving him what he wants just because he’s screaming and kicking (and you want him to stop) TEACHES him to throw “control” tantrums. It’s hard not to get drawn in, but if you do, you’ve “lost” and he’s “won.”

*  DURING A “CONTROL” tantrum, keep calm. You can say, “I know you feel really angry when.. ‘that happens’ (when ..we’re not going to buy that candy, ..you can’t play with Sister’s toy right now).” Put her in a safe place where she can’t hurt herself, and ignore her (as much as possible). Giving attention to a “control” tantrum feeds it, and spanking and yelling only makes her angrier.

*  DURING A “CONTROL” tantrum in a public place like a mall/market, if possible, take him to an enclosed place like the car. Let him calm down (with as Little Eye Contact as possible), then hug/comfort him.

*  DURING A “CONTROL” tantrum at home, when safe, isolate her and she will calm down on her own. When she’s quiet, help her change her attention to an activity she likes. In time, with supportive modeling, she will learn other ways to deal with anger.

Next week – “Social/Emotional: STRESS RESPONSE” Pt. 8

Re-Timer helps users sleep better

Our body clock influences the timing of all our bodily rhythms: our sleeping and waking patterns, alertness, performance levels, and metabolism. These rhythms vary regularly (up and down) over a 24-hour cycle, and are influenced by light. To time these rhythms, photoreceptors in our eyes detect bright light. Often, however, we do not receive the daily bright light we need to maintain a well-timed body clock and natural energy levels. This can be due to working indoors, seeing too little sun during the long winter months, or deliberately avoiding the sun because of concern over UV rays. Indoor lighting is usually not sufficient to time our body clocks. The re-timer was created to provide a portable and 100% UV-free light source.

Are you growing tomatoes?

You might be visited by tomato hornworms. They are sometimes hard to see since they’re the exact color of the tomato plant, grow up to 4″ long and are the caterpillar that will turn into the sphinx moth. After eating the heck out of your tomato plants, they’ll bury themselves in the dirt, come out as a large moth, mate, lay eggs which will hatch and keep eating your tomatoes and leaves. Get a black UV light to shine on your plants at night – the hornworms will glow green, then you just pick them off. Use a paper towel since they like to be stinky when touched and dispose of them. Score, humans!
