Are bacteria good for you or bad?

C-section babies aren’t exposed to important “good” bacteria from vaginal birth.

http://www.fitpregnancy.com/pregnancy/news/newborns-and-good-gut-bacteria

Your body contains 3-5 lb of bacteria (more bacterial cells than human cells) and needs them for digestion/strengthening the immune system to fight pathogens.

http://www.roarproject.org/ROAR/html/commensal.htm

Eating prebiotics (i.e. onions, garlic, bananas, artichokes, many greens) makes good bacteria happy, and eating fat/sugar/low-fiber in processed foods makes bad bacteria happy. What to do? Eat Lactobacillus casei to reduce frequency of ear/GI infections in children and Bifidobacterium infantis for IBS.
