Play and Grow Smart-er Tips Nancy Pyne-Hapke, author of “Play and Grow Smart, A Guide Supporting Brain Development, Birth through Five,” has been giving tips to aid your child’s optimum skill development through proactive neuroscience-based activities every Sunday. These ideas come from scholarly sources to personal interviews, from the internet to periodicals to books. DEVELOPMENTAL SKILL DEFINITION, GROSS MOTOR: coordinating and controlling large muscle movements like throwing underhand and overhand, tossing, hopping, running, kicking, skipping, rolling and so on using agility and balance. THE CRITICAL WINDOW during which the circuits of the brain are being most heavily wired for Gross Motor is prenatal – 5 years old. The more opportunity children have to experience gross motor activities during this ‘window of opportunity,’ the more efficiently their brains will work over the long run. When bodies are moving, mouths are talking, and hands are touching objects, children learn best! SOME GROSS MOTOR DEVELOPMENTAL LEARNING TOOLS (toys and other objects): * toys that require one to kick, pick up, catch, march or some other gross physical activity during operation * push or pull toys * balls * items that require rolling, steering, tossing * play structures * jump ropes * brooms, shovels * construction or building toys that involve hammering or launching * small but strong garden tools * racing sets * sports equipment A FEW GROSS MOTOR TIDBITS: * IN THE 5th YEAR, Kindergartener can hop on one foot, run, gallop, tumble, skip and run on tiptoe. * HE’S INTERESTED in tricks like standing on his head (…with supervision!). * SHE RIDES a tricycle well, maybe showing interest in a bicycle with training wheels. Scooters are fun, too. Next week – Gross Motor, Pt 7. Questions? Email msmarm@roadrunner.com
