Play and Grow Smart-er Tips

Nancy Pyne-Hapke, author of “Play and Grow Smart, A Guide Supporting Brain Development, Birth through Five,” has been giving tips to aid your child’s optimum skill development through proactive neuroscience-based activities every Sunday.  These ideas come from scholarly sources to personal interviews, from the internet to periodicals to books.
SKILL DEVELOPMENT tidbits, 4-year-olds:
•  Alliteration, emphasizing words starting with the same sound, is good in songs and poems,   i.e. “♪ Sam sat on the sofa with Sara,” or “Bat the baseball with Brad and Bobby. ♫” It’s okay to use familiar tunes and dance to your music.
•  With or without musical accompaniment, she likes

…songs that repeat words and melodies,
…rhythms with a definite beat,
…words that ask her to do things,
…fingerplays and nonsense rhymes.

•  Build your “LEARNING LIBRARY” by choosing developmental learning tools, designed to “grow” as children grow, with features and developmental skill elements appealing to different ages simultaneously all in 1 toy, so Baby learns developmentally at 3 months with an object and at 2 years, for example, he’s ready for different features of the same toy.
SOME DEVELOPMENTAL LEARNING TOOLS (toys and other objects) for 4-year-olds and the developmental skills utilized:

•  PROPS and clothing – scarves, Mom’s flat shoes, Grandpa’s fishing hat, Dad’s button-up shirt all feed increasingly imaginative play with Preschooler creating her own story lines, characters, plots and adventures.  (tactile, visual, gross motor, fine motor, creativity, life skills, language/vocabulary, social/emotional, thinking/learning)
• THROWING things is very important – ball toss, basketball, underhand pitching practice for balance, movement, whole-body coordination.  Rearrangeable ring toss with numbered bases (numeric progression) – distance, placement, accuracy. Underhand beanbag toss to targets – eye-hand coordination, depth perception, aim.  (tactile, gross motor, fine motor, visual, language/vocabulary, creativity, thinking/learning)
Next week – “Developmental Learning Tools for 4-year-olds, Pt. 4”
