Play and Grow Smart-er Tips

Nancy Pyne-Hapke, author of “Play and Grow Smart, A Guide Supporting Brain Development, Birth through Five,” has been giving tips to aid your child’s optimum skill development through proactive neuroscience-based activities every Sunday. These ideas come from scholarly sources to personal interviews, from the internet to periodicals to books.
More SKILL DEVELOPMENT tidbits, 4-year-olds:
• Introduce early games for problem solving, logic and early math emphasizing color and shape recognition.
•  Remember, don’t place too much importance on winning early games – at this age DOING IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN WINNING.
•  Build your “LEARNING LIBRARY” by choosing developmental learning tools, designed to “grow” as children grow, with features and developmental skill elements appealing to different ages simultaneously all in 1 toy, so Baby learns developmentally at 3 months with an object and at 2 years, for example, she’s ready for different features of the same toy.
More DEVELOPMENTAL LEARNING TOOLS (toys and other objects) for 4-year-olds and the developmental skills utilized:

•  PLAY “School” with write-on/wipe-off reusable activity cards which break down letters/numbers into patterns he recognizes: circles and lines. Use fat primary writing tools as Preschooler will have more success in fine motor activities than with ‘regular-sized’ crayons/pencils. (tactile, fine motor, life skills, creativity, visual, auditory, social/emotional, language/vocabulary, thinking/learning)

•  BUILDING Toys – limitless stacking and problem-solving using her budding imagination and hand-eye coordination to build higher, more complex towers. Offer wood blocks, big cardboard bricks and snap-togethers. (fine motor, gross motor, creativity, visual, thinking/learning)
Next week – “Developmental Learning Tools for 4-year-olds, Pt. 3”
