Play and Grow Smart-er Tips

Nancy Pyne-Hapke, author of “Play and Grow Smart, A Guide Supporting Brain Development, Birth through Five,” has been giving tips to aid your child’s optimum skill development through proactive neuroscience-based activities every Sunday.  These ideas come from scholarly sources to personal interviews, from the internet to periodicals to books.
SKILL DEVELOPMENT points, 3-year-olds:
•  Piecing puzzles helps Toddler build important pre-math and pre-reading skills.  As he creates a complete puzzle from the sum of its parts, he builds skill at pattern recognition and using visual cues.
•  Each day, recognize/match/name colors, and encourage her to point to something else of the same color.  Play color matching games. Identify objects of like colors. Collect a basket of white socks, green leaves, red blocks.
•  Build your “LEARNING LIBRARY” by choosing developmental learning tools, designed to “grow” as children grow, with features and developmental skill elements appealing to different ages simultaneously all in 1 toy, so Baby learns developmentally at 3 months with an object and at 2 years, for example, she’s ready for different features of the same toy.
SOME DEVELOPMENTAL LEARNING TOOLS (toys and other objects) for 3-year-olds and the developmental skills utilized:

•  MAKE a Number Book – allowing Toddler to choose, cut out magazine pictures and glue 1 object on the page with “1” at the top, 2 objects on the page with “2” at the top; stop at “5.”  Make many Number Books, each themed (color, animal, clothing, etc.). “Read” your Number Books often. (tactile, visual, fine motor, social/emotional, life skills, language/vocabulary, creativity, thinking/learning)

•  PUZZLES!  4-piece, 6-piece, 9-piece puzzles. The challenges grow as the pieces grow.  Farm animals, sea creatures, birds, modes of transportation, and zoo animals are familiar pictures. (fine motor, life skills, creativity, visual, language/vocabulary, thinking/learning)

Next week – “Developmental Learning Tools for 4-year-olds”
