Play and Grow Smart-er Tips

Nancy Pyne-Hapke, author of “Play and Grow Smart, A Guide Supporting Brain Development, Birth through Five,” has been giving tips to aid your child’s optimum skill development through proactive neuroscience-based activities every Sunday.  These ideas come from scholarly sources to personal interviews, from the internet to periodicals to books.
SKILL DEVELOPMENT points, 3-year-olds:
•  Taping paper to the tabletop keeps creative artwork in place and makes for easier cleanup.  Schedule cleanup as a part of the creative ‘art’ session.
•  Put up Toddler’s artwork at his eye height and rotate every week or so.
•  You don’t have to keep every piece of ‘art’ she produces – when you change the artwork from the front of the fridge or cabinet door, save only 1 masterpiece – there will be more next week.  Alternatively, keep a digital record of Toddler’s creative work rather than physically amassing all that prolific output.
• Art supply storage – assemble non-toxic/washable items in plastic lunchboxes.
•  Build your “LEARNING LIBRARY” by choosing developmental learning tools, designed to “grow” as children grow, with features and developmental skill elements appealing to different ages simultaneously all in 1 toy, so Baby learns developmentally at 3 months with an item and at 2 years, for example, he’s ready for different features of the same toy.
SOME DEVELOPMENTAL LEARNING TOOLS (toys and other objects) for 3-year-olds and the developmental skills utilized:

• ART supplies – fat primary crayons (best for fine motor control; 3-year-olds break thin crayons too easily), watercolors, clay, collage basics (magazines, newspapers), construction paper, tempera and finger paints, wide brushes for “painting” a fence with water (tactile, fine motor, gross motor, social/emotional, life skills, creativity, visual, language/vocabulary, thinking/learning)

Next week – “Developmental Learning Tools for 3-year-olds, Pt. 5”
