Play and Grow Smart-er Tips

Nancy Pyne-Hapke, author of “Play and Grow Smart, A Guide Supporting Brain Development, Birth through Five,” has been giving tips to aid your child’s optimum skill development through proactive neuroscience-based activities every Sunday.  These ideas come from scholarly sources to personal interviews, from the internet to periodicals to books.
SKILL DEVELOPMENT points, 24 – 30 mo.
•  Toddler can form images in her mind and organize her toys by size or color or shape.
• His memory is improving, and he may be able to tell you at the end of the day what he had for lunch.
•  A minority of 2-year-olds also knows colors and letters and can count to 10 by “rote memory” (without “1-to-1 correspondence”).
•  Build your “LEARNING LIBRARY” by choosing developmental learning tools, designed to “grow” as children grow, with features and developmental skill elements appealing to different ages simultaneously all in 1 toy, so Baby learns developmentally at 3 months with an item and at 2 years, for example, she’s ready for different features of the same toy.
SOME DEVELOPMENTAL LEARNING TOOLS (toys and other objects) for 24- to 30-month-olds and the developmental skills utilized:

•  RIDE-on toys – foot-pushed, well-balanced [too early for pedals] (gross motor, life skills, creativity, thinking/learning)

•  BOOKS – simple storybooks about everyday familiar things with prominent illustrations/information that matches text; tell longer stories, and try different books more often (visual, auditory, fine motor, social-emotional, life skills, creativity, language/vocabulary, thinking/learning)

Next week – “Developmental Learning Tools for 30- to 36-mo-olds”
