Play and Grow Smart-er Tips

Nancy Pyne-Hapke, author of “Play and Grow Smart, A Guide Supporting Brain Development, Birth through Five,” has been giving tips to aid your child’s optimum skill development through proactive neuroscience-based activities every Sunday.  These ideas come from scholarly sources to personal interviews, from the internet to periodicals to books.
SKILL DEVELOPMENT points, 24 – 30 mo.
•  Toddler is starting to understand abstract concepts, asking for more milk and inquiring about whether he can go to bed later, but he still doesn’t understand what next month or next year means.
• Fantasy play emerges.
• Taking her out and about, consider bringing along a traveling activity center with manipulatives to keep her busy.
•  Build your “LEARNING LIBRARY” by choosing developmental learning tools, designed to “grow” as children grow, with features and developmental skill elements appealing to different ages simultaneously all in 1 toy, so Baby learns developmentally at 3 months with an item and at 2 years, for example, he’s ready for different features of the same toy.
SOME DEVELOPMENTAL LEARNING TOOLS (toys and other objects) for 24- to 30-month-olds and the developmental skills utilized:

• AUDITORY A-B-Cs and 1-2-3s – singing, listening to and exposure to musical instruments helps “first learning” sink in (creativity, auditory, language/vocabulary, music, thinking/learning)

•  DRESS up and fantasy – old grownup clothes and jewelry for on and off, on and off (tactile, fine motor, social/emotional, language/vocabulary, life skills, creativity, visual, thinking/learning)

Next week – “Developmental Learning Tools for 24- to 30-mo-olds, Pt. 3”
