Play and Grow Smart-er Tips

Nancy Pyne-Hapke, author of “Play and Grow Smart, A Guide Supporting Brain Development, Birth through Five,” has been giving tips to aid your child’s optimum skill development through proactive neuroscience-based activities every Sunday.  These ideas come from scholarly sources to personal interviews, from the internet to periodicals to books.
SKILL DEVELOPMENT points , 3 mo. – 6 mo.
•  Baby discovers at this stage how much fun her own hands can be now that they’re no longer clenched in a fist.  She can suck her fingers and use them to grasp a toy that has been placed in his hands.
•  Since she has begun to reach for and explore objects, give her safe things of grasping size and different textures to hold.
•  He’ll soon rotate his wrist to inspect the toy (learning tool) from all sides and pass a toy back and forth between hands.
•  Build your “LEARNING LIBRARY” by choosing developmental learning tools, designed to “grow” as children grow, with features and developmental skill elements appealing to different ages simultaneously all in 1 toy, so Baby learns developmentally at 3 months with an item and at 2 years, for example, he’s ready for different features of the same toy.
SOME DEVELOPMENTAL LEARNING TOOLS (toys and other objects) for 3-month-olds to 6-month-olds and the developmental skills utilized:
•  TEETHERS – bright with various textures, sounds and noises  ***beware: NO phthalates*** (visual, fine motor, tactile, auditory)

•  ACTIVITY center – a rack or board with dangling/spinning/rattling objects to bat at, pull, hit, squeak [good until Baby can push up on hands and knees] (tactile, fine motor, gross motor, visual, auditory, thinking/learning)

Next week – “Developmental Learning Tools for 3- to 6-mo-olds, Pt 2”

Through deep body listening and body dialogue you can connect to how and where your body holds emotional burdens. Your body can repair even after years of intense holding.
