JANUARY Annual Sales

Most people know about after-Christmas-sales with savings of 50%-90% on cards, decorations and candies. Keep cards in a box with a small freshener and they will look brand new next year. In addition look for substantial discounts on items that were hot sellers at Christmas time such as winter clothing, cookware, kitchen gadgets, housewares, rugs and toys. You may find these on the closeout shelves.

TYPICAL JANUARY ANNUAL SALES: Annual white sales; stock up on linens, sheets and towels.

MAJOR PURCHASES TYPICALLY ON SALE in January: Appliances, furniture.

FRUITS AND VEGETABLES: avocados, broccoli, cabbage, celery, collards, endive, grapefruit, kale, oranges, rutabagas, tangerines, winter squash. NOTE: With some produce now available all during the year, many people have forgotten when fruits and vegetables are really fresh. Buying in season means that these items are often cheaper, fresher, taste better and that money may be going to local farmers.

Play and Grow Smart-er Tips

Nancy Pyne-Hapke, author of “Play and Grow Smart, A Guide Supporting Brain Development, Birth through Five,” has been giving tips to aid your child’s optimum skill development through proactive neuroscience-based activities every Sunday.  These ideas come from scholarly sources to personal interviews, from the internet to periodicals to books.
“MATH/LOGIC” Developmental Skill Definition: recognizing and understanding cause-and-effect relationships, forming and understanding concepts, matching, classifying, categorizing, reasoning, problem-solving, strategizing, organizing ideas.
THE CRITICAL WINDOW during which the circuits of the brain are being most heavily wired for Math/Logic development is 1 – 4 years old. The more opportunity children have to experience healthy, positive and nurturing math/logic experiences during this critical period, the more efficiently their brains will work over the long run.
A FEW DEVELOPMENTAL LEARNING TOOLS (toys and other objects) for Math/Logic development:  • rattles • water  • sand  • objects that can be taken apart and put back together  • toys involving problem-solving • games  • clay  • objects involving counting forward and backward  • toys with various shapes, colors, sizes • blocks  • puzzles  • objects that can be matched, classified, categorized  • objects that nest
MORE PRO-ACTIVE Parent-Supervised MATH/LOGIC Activities, 4-year-olds:
•  SUPPORT Preschooler in identifying numbers 1-6 in daily life and count everything in sight – flowers, steps, cookies, soft drink cans, plastic caps from soda or bottled water, spoons, etc.  The next step is to put all the white soda caps together, then the green ones, the red ones.  Teaspoons, soup spoons, kitchen spoons.
•  ON A safe (carpeted?) floor, play with canned goods – make stacks of 2, 3, 4, 5, 6.  Stack them like bricks, balancing 1 on 2.  What shapes can you build?  Watch out for little fingers playing with heavy cans.  Do not use empty cans – sharp open edges can cut!
•  USE NUMBERS, colors and shapes in conversation – during a snack, “Here are 3 round yellow crackers.”  “Can you stack 4 blue square blocks?”  The more description you use, the greater the brain development.
Next week – “Math/Logic, Pt. 8”
