Play and Grow Smart-er Tips

Nancy Pyne-Hapke, author of “Play and Grow Smart, A Guide Supporting Brain Development, Birth through Five,” has been giving tips to aid your child’s optimum skill development through proactive neuroscience-based activities every Sunday.  These ideas come from scholarly sources to personal interviews, from the internet to periodicals to books.
“MATH/LOGIC” Developmental Skill Definition: recognizing and understanding cause-and-effect relationships, forming and understanding concepts, matching, classifying, categorizing, reasoning, problem-solving, strategizing, organizing ideas.
THE CRITICAL WINDOW during which the circuits of the brain are being most heavily wired for Math/Logic development is 1 – 4 years old. The more opportunity children have to experience healthy, positive and nurturing math/logic experiences during this critical period, the more efficiently their brains will work over the long run.
A FEW DEVELOPMENTAL LEARNING TOOLS (toys and other objects) for Math/Logic development: • water  • sand  • objects that when moved make noise  • objects that can be taken apart and put back together  • toys involving problem-solving  • games  • clay  • objects involving counting forward and backward • toys with various shapes, colors, sizes  • blocks  • puzzles  • objects that can be matched, classified, categorized  • objects that nest
SOME PRO-ACTIVE Parent-Supervised MATH/LOGIC Activities, 12 – 24 months:
• FROM 12 MONTHS,
– – Zipping and unzipping is great fun – “open….  close….  open….,” “left….  right….  left….” etc.
– – Let him play in the bath to learn the fine motor skills of pouring and squeezing with sponges and plastic (measuring?) cups.  Never leave him alone in the tub.
– – Count anything (fingers, toes, socks….) and name everything (dog, cat, plane, tree, etc).
• FROM 18 MONTHS,
– – Toddler is beginning to understand simple concepts like space and dimension.
– – She can probably put together a basic 2-piece puzzle.
– – Help him build with shoe boxes.
– – She is figuring out cause and effect – when she pulls the lever on her jack-in-the-box, a clown pops out.
– – Put a small ball on his high chair tray, and teach him how to blow on the ball to make it move.
Next week – “Math/Logic, Pt. 5”

Olive is the very first full length feature film shot 100% on a cell phone

A 35 mm lens adapter was fabricated to fit the smart phone in order to achieve a shallow depth of field. The film simply put is about a little girl that transforms the lives of three people without speaking one word. The movie stars two time Academy Award nominated actress Gena Rowlands (The Notebook, A Woman Under the Influence). The sound design was done by Skywalker Sound. The financing of Olive was done independently of any corporation. The goal now is to be the first film to not only be shot on a cell phone, but to also be the first independently financed feature film on 2,000+ theaters across the United States without the backing of a major studio.

The Dîner en Blanc – How cool!

The White Dinner is a “bright” idea – At the last minute, the location is given to those who have been patiently waiting to learn the “Dîner en Blanc’s” secret place. Everyone, dressed all in white, and conducting themselves with the greatest decorum, elegance, and etiquette, all meet for a mass “chic picnic” in a public space. Beyond the spectacle and refined elegance of the dinner itself, guests are brought together from diverse backgrounds by a love of beauty and good taste. The “Dîner en Blanc” recalls the elegance and glamor of court society, and diners engage one another knowing they are taking part in a truly magical event.
