Play and Grow Smart-er Tips
Nancy Pyne-Hapke, author of “Play and Grow Smart, A Guide Supporting Brain Development, Birth through Five,” has been giving tips to aid your child’s optimum skill development through proactive neuroscience-based activities every Sunday.  These ideas come from scholarly sources to personal interviews, from the internet to periodicals to books.
THE CRITICAL WINDOWS during which the circuits of the brain are being most heavily wired for Musical Development is 3 – 10 years.  The more opportunity children have to experience healthy, positive and nurturing Musical experiences during this critical period, the more efficiently their brains will work over the long run.
A FEW DEVELOPMENTAL LEARNING TOOLS (toys and other objects) for Musical development:  * musical instruments  * rattles and other toys for making rhythmic sounds  * items that create gentle, rhythmic sounds  * play phones  * toys that jingle, squeak, chirp, click, snap, ring  * any technology that plays music  * singing toys
GENERAL “MUSIC” TIDBITS:
From newborn….
*  Music helps with bonding – dance around with Baby to a jazzy tune and snuggle in for a love song.
*  Sing songs softly, and watch for her response.
*  Gently, play different types of music, and play music at different times of day.
*  Think about various styles, rhythms, tempos and beats (gentle melodic better than pulsing bass for brain development).
*  Keep the volume low since an infant’s hearing can be damaged by loud music.
Next week – “Music, Pt. 5”

Race to Nowhere

November 2nd, 6.30pm

Congregation Or Ami and Ilan Ramon Day School (formerly Heschel West Day School) invite you to view an important documentary about our educational system, Race to Nowhere, on  November 2, 2011,

Race to Nowhere, a provocative film made by Vicki Abeles – a concerned mother turned filmmaker, addresses the high-pressure culture that occupies our schools and the price young people pay for this “race to nowhere” where high-stakes testing has by and large replaced teaching. Stress-related illness and burnout are now rampant, as is cheating. Many young people arrive at college or the workplace unprepared and uninspired Screening to be followed by facilitated discussion.
