Art Along the Hyphen: The Mexican-American Generation October 14, 2011-January 8, 2012 Focusing on the period 1945-1965, this exhibition presents the work of Mexican American artists who contributed to the emerging California iconography and its connections to the national imaginary, whether as part of the American West, Spanish California, or Hollywood. With an emphasis on painting and sculpture, the exhibition explores each artist’s dialogue with the various art movements of the 20th century as refracted through cultural heritage, local observation, and social commentary. The exhibition also documents the fluid transition by some artists into Chicano art movement activism in the 1970s without forsaking aesthetic standards.
