Play and Grow Smart-er Tips
Nancy Pyne-Hapke, author of “Play and Grow Smart, A Guide Supporting Brain Development, Birth through Five,” has been giving tips to aid your child’s optimum skill development through proactive neuroscience-based activities every Monday.  These ideas come from scholarly sources to personal interviews, from the internet to periodicals to books.
FOR THOSE NEW TO JEN’S LIST, the following developmental skills will be discussed: tactile, vision, gross and fine motor, auditory, social/emotional, language/vocabulary, life skills, math/logic, creativity, music in the following age increments: birth to 3 mo, 3 to 6 mo, 6 to 9 mo, 9 to 12 mo, 12 to 18 mo, 18 to 24 mo, 24 to 30 mo, 30 to 36 mo, 3 years old, 4 years old, and 5 years old.
“SOCIAL/EMOTIONAL” DEVELOPMENTAL SKILL DEFINITION: bonding, building relationships, appreciating differences, self-esteem, self-expression, responsibility, self-reliance, resourcefulness.
THE CRITICAL WINDOW during which the circuits of the brain are being most heavily wired for “Social/Emotional: Social Attachment” development is birth to 18 months.  The more opportunity children have for positive social-emotional experiences during this critical period, the more efficiently their brains will work over the long run.
Some “SOCIAL/EMOTIONAL: SOCIAL ATTACHMENT” tidbits:
 ·  ALMOST IMMEDIATELY for Baby, the importance of bonding and building relationships with others is essential to form an understanding of the world around and within.  Emotional expression and awareness can be better understood once stable and healthy relationships are established. Social/emotional attributes can be enhanced with toys (Learning Tools) that promote proper and fulfilling modes of expression and interaction.  For a baby, learning social skills might mean just bonding to those who love them; for an older child, it might mean joining a team or having a sleepover.
 ·  CHILDREN, PARTICULARLY in the preschool years, become more social and more inquisitive.  They are beginning to move out into the world, gaining a sense of others and developing self-confidence.
 ·  EMOTIONAL COMPETENCE — self-motivation and the abilities to stick to a task, to understand others, to build trusting relationships, to cope with stress, and to manage strong feelings — is developed by hugs rather than stern words, by patience and warmth, by mirroring appropriate modeling and by success experiences.
Next week – “SOCIAL/EMOTIONAL: Social Attachment” Pt. 2
