Believe One for One

Eleven year old Madi believes in the power of empathy. So she started Believe One for One Bracelets to encourage active empathy. Buy one when you need to Believe. The charm says “Believe” to empower yourself to believe in hope, health, happiness, strength, courage or anything you choose. There is a worry bead on the end to rub for comfort. When you are feeling strong enough, look around you. Find someone who may need it more than you and give them your bracelet. In addition, when you buy one, Madi will make another and donate it to a child in crisis. It’s a gift that gives and gives.

FDA: calorie counts must be published in a year

A year from now, calorie counts from vending machines, amusement parks, “prepared” foods in supermarkets (not bread or rotisserie chicken), restaurants with 20 or more outlets, fast-food chains, sit-down restaurants, and movie theaters must be displayed. Alcohol beverages will be included. Menu labeling is part of the ACA and is intended to help protect and strengthen U.S. families’ access to healthy, nutritious foods. These rules about calorie counts will help you be conscious about what your family eats.

10 things you didn’t know about M&Ms

http://features.aol.com/video/10-things

Some general Creativity: ART tidbits:

** FROM 2, play dough or clay offers experience for pounding, rolling and squeezing (fine motor practice + tactile opportunities).  Avoid making models in clay or drawing pictures for him to copy.  He learns more by working out his own ideas, and adult-induced items can actually hinder learning and healthy self-expression.

** FINGERPAINTS in the bath (followed by a real bath) or colored gooey soap is hugely entertaining!

** RIPPING AND TEARING is a fun natural desire, so provide colored scrap paper and old newspaper (including colored comics) to avoid having books and magazines shredded; call this paper “special collage paper”).  Then glue scraps on cardboard to make a torn paper collage.  Remember, minimal adult direction.

** HALF-FILL a dishpan or 2 with beans, rice or snow (if it’s around) and, with hands and plastic kitchen tools, let Toddler explore and practice shoveling, pouring, dumping and funneling.  Watch her out of the corner of your eye so she doesn’t eat what she shouldn’t.

Next week – “Creativity: ART, Pt. 3”
