Children’s Book and Song

I Wonder What It’s Like To Be was written for children up to 6 years old. It follows the song of the same name. It’s about a boy named Wonder who wonders what it would be like to be a Fish or a Bee or a Flea or any other thing. Children love to sing along with the song as they read the book. There are a few pages in the back of the book for your child or grandchild to create their own things to “Wonder” what they would like to be.

Before I was a Mom
I never tripped over toys or forgot words to a lullaby.
I didn’t worry whether or not my plants were poisonous.
I never thought about immunizations.
Before I was a Mom
I had never been puked on.
Pooped on.
Chewed on.
Peed on.
I had complete control of my mind and my thoughts.
I slept all night.
Before I was a Mom
I never held down a screaming child so doctors could do tests.
Or give shots.
I never looked into teary eyes and cried.
I never got gloriously happy over a simple grin.
I never sat up late hours at night watching a baby sleep.
Before I was a Mom
I never held a sleeping baby just because I didn’t want to put him down.
I never felt my heart break into a million pieces when I couldn’t stop the hurt.
I never knew that something so small could affect my life so much.
I never knew that I could love someone so much.
I never knew I would love being a Mom.
Before I was a Mom –
I didn’t know the feeling of having my heart outside my body.
I didn’t know how special it could feel to feed a hungry baby.
I didn’t know that bond between a mother and her child.
I didn’t know that something so small could make me feel so important and happy.
Before I was a Mom –
I had never gotten up in the middle of the night every 10 minutes to make sure all was okay.
I had never known the warmth, the joy, the love, the heartache,
the wonderment or the satisfaction of being a Mom.
I didn’t know I was capable of feeling so much, before I was a Mom.
Happy Mother’s Day!

Play and Grow Smart-er Tips

Nancy Pyne-Hapke, author of “Play and Grow Smart, A Guide Supporting Brain Development, Birth through Five,” has been giving tips to aid your child’s optimum skill development through proactive neuroscience-based activities every Monday. These ideas come from scholarly sources to personal interviews, from the internet to periodicals to books.

DEVELOPMENTAL Skill Definition, SOCIAL/EMOTIONAL: bonding, building relationships, appreciating differences, self-esteem, self-expression, responsibility, self-reliance, resourcefulness, curiosity, motivation, persistence, self-control.

THE CRITICAL WINDOW during which the circuits of the brain are being most heavily wired for “SOCIAL/EMOTIONAL: STRESS RESPONSE” development is birth to about 3 years. The more opportunity children have for positive social-emotional experiences during this critical period, the more efficiently their brains will work over the long run.

Some “Social/Emotional: STRESS RESPONSE” tidbits:

*  INSTEAD OF programming your child’s expectation for hearing “NO,” tell him HOW WELL he’s doing when he’s doing what you WANT him to do by acknowledging his action or behavior. When he puts his toys away without a fuss, say “I like it when you put your toys away nicely.” Say, “Good listening!” “I like how you paid attention!” “Nice teeth brushing!” rather than praising the child (as a person) with “good boy.” When he brings his plate into the kitchen, say, “Thank you for remembering to bring your plate into the kitchen.”

*  CHILDREN, and sometimes even adults, are LITERAL and relate to ‘patterns of behavior’ – if you don’t say the general phrase “good girl!” every single time she acts in a positive way, she’ll unconsciously interpret that she’s been a “bad” girl when you DON’T say “good girl!” even though that’s not what you mean!

*  LOUD VOICES/HITTING don’t model what you want the child to do. If you ‘yell to communicate,’ you’re modeling ‘yelling to communicate.’ When you use physical discipline, it gives him permission to hit when he’s angry. When you use soft warm touches and a moderated voice with tempered words, in time he will, too.

Next week – “Social/Emotional: STRESS RESPONSE” Pt. 5

(Hint: onions, lettuce, broccoli, carrots, peas are not.) There’s enough material here for school reports.
