Play and Grow Smart-er Tips

Nancy Pyne-Hapke, author of “Play and Grow Smart, A Guide Supporting Brain Development, Birth through Five,” has been giving tips to aid your child’s optimum skill development through proactive neuroscience-based activities every Sunday.  These ideas come from scholarly sources to personal interviews, from the internet to periodicals to books.
“MATH/LOGIC” Developmental Skill Definition: recognizing and understanding cause-and-effect relationships, forming and understanding concepts, matching, classifying, categorizing, reasoning, problem-solving, strategizing, organizing ideas.
THE CRITICAL WINDOW during which the circuits of the brain are being most heavily wired for Math/Logic development is 1 – 4 years old. The more opportunity children have to experience healthy, positive and nurturing math/logic experiences during this critical period, the more efficiently their brains will work over the long run.
A FEW DEVELOPMENTAL LEARNING TOOLS (toys and other objects) for Math/Logic development:  * rattles * water  * sand  * objects that can be taken apart and put back together  * toys involving problem-solving * games  * clay  * objects involving counting forward and backward  * toys with various shapes, colors, sizes * blocks  * puzzles  * objects that can be matched, classified, categorized  * objects that nest
MORE PRO-ACTIVE Parent-Supervised MATH/LOGIC Activities, 4-year-olds  —  MAKE BOOKS!
* “WORDS” book
…. use pictures of things Preschooler is familiar with (household things, things seen at the park/beach/neighborhood) and her favorite things she cuts from magazines using “safety/primary” scissors.
…. print in lower case letters 1 or 2 words associated with the pictures she chose.  Use lower case letters – we use lower case letters more frequently, and 2/3 of the printed upper case (capital) letters have a different shape than the lower case letters.
* “SHAPES” book
…. focusing on circles, squares and triangles (later on rectangles, diamonds, ovals, other polygons and different shapes) create ‘chapters’ of
    . . . objects taken from newspapers/magazines
    . . . child-created shapes
    . . . shapes traced from objects: circles from saucers or cups, squares/rectangles from boxes, etc.
Next week – “Math/Logic, Pt. 11”
