PlayandGrow Smart-er Tips
Nancy Pyne-Hapke, author of Play and Grow Smart, A Guide Supporting Brain Development, Birth through Five, has been giving tips to aid your child’s optimum skill development through proactive neuroscience-based activities every Monday.  These ideas come from scholarly sources to personal interviews, from the internet to periodicals to books.
DEVELOPMENTAL LEARNING TOOLS for 6- to 9-month-olds
•  This is the age at which most babies go mobile.  From sitting, it’s a short developmental step to scooting around on his stomach, to rocking back and forth on his hands and knees, and then to crawling; and by the time he’s 8 months old, he may be pulling himself up to a standing position and climbing on your stairs.
•  Build your “learning Library” by choosing developmental learning tools designed to “grow” as children grow, that have features and developmental skill elements appealing to different ages simultaneously all in one toy.  This way, Baby learns developmentally at 6 months old with an item, and at 3 years old, she’s ready for different features of the same toy.
Consider the following Developmental Learning Tools options (with skills development):
•  ACTIVITY Rattles – investigation /sensory stimulation: bright colors for teething, spinning, peek-a-boo, mirror and bead soundmakers (tactile, fine motor, gross motor, creativity, visual, auditory, thinking/learning)
•  HOUSEHOLD Items – plastic bowl, measuring cups, wooden spoons.  Open your lower kitchen cupboards for exploration while making meals. (fine motor, gross motor, life skills, creativity, auditory)
•  additional developmental learning tools: rattles that roll, graspable wood/soft blocks, squeaky rubber toys

Summer Camp – ages 2-5
This fast growing Summer Camp offers a wonderful opportunity for your young student to have his/her first experience in a real Summer Camp. Children are guided in organized activities such as singing and dancing, water activities, working with animals, and cooking with a loving, caring faculty that serves as Early Childhood teachers throughout the regular school year. Students also enjoy playing in a beautiful 2,500 square foot grass yard with a large jungle gym and riding bicycles on a 1,575 square foot black top yard where they can also play basketball. The theme for this summer is Every day is as Colorful as a Rainbow, a 7 week program where each student will explore 7 colors of the rainbow and how those colors relate to our lives. At its heart, Kabbalah is about creating a lasting sense of connectedness between individuals and their surroundings. At KCA, they teach that belief through hands-on exploration, experimentation and experiential learning.

The Hammer Museum will kick off its first ever K.A.M.P. (Kids’ Art Museum Project)
Sunday, May 16th from 10am-2pm
An event imagined by artists for kids. Painters, sculptors, photographers, and other creative pros will lead inventive workshops and experiences for children from ages 4 to 14 in the carefree atmosphere of the Hammer courtyard. All K.A.M.P. proceeds will support the Museum’s growing Hammer Kids public programming. From morning until early afternoon, young guests will have exclusive access to the museum’s exhibitions and galleries as they participate in hands-on activities created and guided by well-known contemporary artists. With the understanding that kids have a great aptitude for what’s new and cutting-edge, these workshops will comprise traditional mediums— like drawing and painting— while also exploring alternative forms of expression such as video, performance, and web-based arts. All of the projects will be appropriate for kids, and, most importantly, kid-safe! K.A.M.P. will provide one-of-a-kind interactive experiences for budding artists and their families in one of L.A.’s most unique creative environments.

An Illustrated Children’s Book to Help Prepare Your Child for Swim Lessons
Luca Learns to Swim is the only illustrated children’s book which helps first time swimmers, ages 2 to 7, prepare for swim lessons. This beautiful and heartwarming tale was written by Barry Shrewsbury, a professional swim instructor with over 18 years experience (specializing in teaching children, in the Los Angeles area, with a fear of water). Your child will preview, through Luca’s experiences, the natural progression from non-swimmer to swimmer and be able to visualize him or herself going through this process as well.  This engaging story invites an active discussion between you and your child regarding their concerns and questions about learning to swim. Luca’s journey takes him from anxious beginner to happy, enthusiastic, and “pool safe” swimmer. Reading Luca aloud will not only prepare your child for this wonderful journey by demystifying the process, it will help increase the probability of his or her success. The Luca website (www.lucalearnstoswim.com) also has a wealth of information for parents with beginning swimmers. Under the resources tab you will find four articles written to support families in choosing and preparing for swim lessons. In addition, Mr. Shrewsbury has developed two videos, that you can find on his website, which will support the swim lesson process, Luca has also been endorsed for use within the autistic community (also under the resources tab). The best available price ($14.99), is through the website and it can also be found in major booksellers including: Barnes & Noble, Target, Borders and Amazon.com.
