·         Patriot’s Day  – Third Monday in April – Some people know little or nothing about Patriot’s Day. To New Englander’s, it is a big, big day. In the states in New England, it’s a holiday with a day off of work. Banks, schools, post offices, and businesses have the day off. Patriot’s Day commemorates the Battle of Lexington and Concord on April 19, 1775. This battle began the American Revolutionary War. It also honors the “Midnight Ride of Paul Revere”, that evening when Paul Revere rode through town warning the colonists that  “The Red Coats are coming!”  

 

 

Nancy Pyne-Hapke, author of Play and Grow Smart, A Guide Supporting Brain Development, Birth through Five, has been giving tips to aid your child’s optimum skill development through proactive neuroscience-based activities every Monday.  These ideas come from scholarly sources to personal interviews, from the internet to periodicals to books. 

•  Baby’s play is becoming more vigorous.  When she picks up a spoon now, she bangs it against pots and pans, and she furiously rattles a bunch of keys she finds.  She now grabs 2 toys at once and slams them together, but her movements are also becoming more precise; and thanks to her growing dexterity, she can pick a raisin off the floor.

•  She is becoming more aware that objects still exist even when she can no longer see or feel them.  This means since she’ll miss a favorite stuffed animal if she can’t see it, she’ll try to search for it.  It also means you can begin playing hide-and-seek games with objects.  Hide her teddy bear while she’s looking, and she’ll find it right away – and be very proud she did.

•  “LOVEYS” – Soft Dolls or Stuffed Animals – pediatricians say attachment to a “lovey”/favorite toy/blanket can ease transitions later on.  Avoid dolls or stuffed animals with anything that can be pulled off (or stuffed with) and put into a child’s mouth.  Some “loveys” have gentle rattles inside for auditory reassurance.  Don’t get dolls so big they’re hard for Baby to pick up/explore. (tactile, fine motor, social/emotional, auditory)

•  BOARD Books – for mouthing/drooling; to develop an ear for the cadence of language, vary the pitch of your voice using accents, singing and vocalizing; let her flip the pages and “read” to you (fine motor, creativity, visual, auditory, lang/vocab, thinking/learning)

The time is from 6:30-8:30pm and the workshop is in the cafeteria. The title of the workshop is, “No I Won’t and You Can’t Make Me!” – Effectively Dealing with Power Struggles. In this workshop parents will learn what causes power struggles as well as ideas for curing “parent deafness” in children. This workshop is helpful for parents of toddlers as well as teenagers, and examples are given for common power struggles in both these age groups. Parents are shown what to do when a 3 year old is screaming “NO”, and also what to do if a teenager is watching TV when he or she is supposed to be doing chores. Parents will be given actual examples of children misbehaving and shown the specific steps to respond effectively rather than yelling or spanking. The workshop leader, Deborah Godfrey Fox, has been teaching this workshop for 17 years and shown thousands of parents these ideas for creating calmer more peaceful families.
