PlayandGrow Smart-er Tips
Nancy Pyne-Hapke, author of Play and Grow Smart, A Guide Supporting Brain Development, Birth through Five, has been giving tips to aid your child’s optimum skill development through proactive neuroscience-based activities every Monday.  These ideas come from scholarly sources to personal interviews, from the internet to periodicals to books.
Developmental Learning Tools for 3- to 6-month-olds
•  Make toys safe for chewing – check labels – because Baby want to look at, feel, chew on, handle, and drop everything!
•  BY 6 months, she may sit up, giving her a new perspective on life, making her center of her own clanging, colorful, ever-changing world.
•  Build your “Learning Library” by choosing developmental learning tools, designed to “grow” as children grow, that have features and developmental skill elements appealing to different ages simultaneously, all in 1 toy.  This way, Baby learns developmentally at 3 months with an item, and at 2 years, for example, he’s ready for different features of the same toy.
Consider the following Developmental Learning Tools options (with skills development):
•  SOFT STUFFED animal – soft and cuddly; careful – watch out for this safety issue: check for no inside structural wire to pop through or eyes to yank off (tactile, fine motor, social/emotional, visual)
•  CLOTH BOOKS – bright, high contrast easy-to-see patterns and pictures, sensory surprises with rattles, squeakers, mirrors, textures, crinkles, movable features (tactile, visual, fine motor, auditory, language/vocabulary, thinking/learning)
•  LIGHTWEIGHT rattles – bright colors with colorful tinkling beads and places large enough for Baby to grasp and manipulate, mirrored surfaces offering reflective light play and pliable, gum-friendly teething areas (tactile, fine motor, visual, auditory, thinking/learning)
•  ACTIVITY quilts and play mats – clean, familiar surface to take along (tactile, gross motor, social/emotional, visual, auditory)
Next week – “Developmental Learning Tools for 6-mo- to 9-mo-olds”  Any ?’s – email Nancy Pyne-Hapke at msmarm@roadrunner.com
