Aquatic Safety Instruction has a new West Hills Home!
In addition to the Encino & Northridge locations, today’s Jen’s List sponsor, ASI, opens their newest pool located at the Kadima Day School. Did you know that ASI is one of the founding Water Safety Instructional schools in the So Cal area? As providers for the American Red Cross, their standards are high and they require that all aquatic staff are Water Safety Instructor (WSI) and Lifeguard (LG) certified. Most staff are professional educators with a min of a BA within Physical Education or have their teaching credentials. Planning a Party? With over 700 events under their belts, let them watch your pool so you can enjoy your guests. “Swimming instruction is not enough! Learning to survive is everything!”
All pools are heated to an average of 88 degrees. All Pools Open May 1st – Registration is now open. Email information@aquaticsafetyinstruction.org for more info or call 818 363-0221.

Today in History
·         Oliver Pollack invents the dollar sign $ (1778)
·         Dexter Mason Ferry and partners found Gardener, Ferry & Church Seed Company, now called Ferrry-Morse, the oldest seed company in America (1856)
·         Daytime soap opera General Hospital first airs on ABC (1963)
·         April Fool’s Day
Traditionally, April Fool’s Day is an opportunity for playing jokes or tricks on one another. The stranger and the more absurd the better. The challenge is to carry out a trick that is believable, if only for a little while. Tricks are most successful if played earlier in the day before a person is wise to what is going on. Younger children are also more gullible. Any tricks or jokes must be harmless and in good taste for the unsuspecting “victim”. And, we suggest you think twice before pulling one on the boss, even if he or she is known to be of good humor. Important: Jokes and gags must be harmless  and fun. They must not be dangerous or hurt anyone’s feelings. Give your jokes and gags some thought before carrying them out. Ten, have fun!

Do you still have that low belly sag from your previous pregnancy?
Do you suffer from back pain or experience bladder control issues? Our babies sure are cute, but do we have to suffer? NO! Restore the Core™ is a mat pilates class that restores the postural changes and muscular imbalances that pregnancy and childbirth bring. Some muscles become too tight and short, others become overstretched. This is exactly why we have to retrain the pelvic floor and every other muscle that was mistreated, underused or overused during pregnancy and childbirth! With these very specific exercises and stretches, the core will tighten up and the result is a slimmer, stronger body and NO MORE LOW BELLY SAG! Plus, gain the ability to run, jump, sneeze and hold it! Eight week session starts this Monday, April 5th on Mondays AND Wednesdays at 8:30 pm in a private gym in Tarzana. The total cost is $289 and it includes your mommymuscle® equipment and access to the entire gym before and after class. Sign up now – SUMMER IS COMING! Email melissa.thomas@strollerfit.com or call 818-631-1257. Space is limited! Restore the Core™ is safe and effective for prenatal moms.

Low temps are on the way for Los Angeles
Here are some precautions you can take against frost damage:
• Cover up before dusk! By the time it gets dark much of the stored heat in the garden has already been lost. If you have time, build a simple frame around the plant, or row of plants. (Even a single stake can be used in many cases.) Then drape a cover of newspaper, cardboard, plastic tarps, bed sheeting or any other lightweight material over the frame to create a tent. As a rule, fabric or newspaper is better than plastic as it allows the plants to breathe. It is said that plastic can “trap” cold air around plants. But plastic will be better than nothing. If you don’t have time to create a frame, lay the protective cover directly onto the plant. This will help to slow the loss of heat rising from the foliage and the ground.Remove the covers in the morning, once the frost has thawed, to let the light and fresh air back in, and to prevent overheating by the sun.
• For smaller individual plants you can use glass jars, milk jugs with the bottom removed, paper cups upside down flower pots as heat traps.Don’t forget to remove these covers in the morning.
• Potted plants are particularly susceptible to frosts because their roots are also unprotected. If you are unable to move your container plants indoors or under cover remember to also wrap the pot in burlap or bubble wrap, or simply bury the pot in soil in addition to protecting the foliage.
•  Spread two to three inches of shredded bark, leaves or straw around plants to help the soil maintain a warm temperature. Mulching plants is a great way to protect hardy plants and help control weeds at the same time.
• If your efforts were too late, or too little to protect your plants from a frost, resist the urge to cut off the damaged parts of the plants. To a certain extent, these dead leaves and stems will provide limited insulation from further frost damage.
