PlayandGrow Smart-er Tips
Nancy Pyne-Hapke, author of Play and Grow Smart, A Guide Supporting Brain Development, Birth through Five, has been giving tips to aid your child’s optimum skill development through proactive neuroscience-based activities every Monday.  These ideas come from scholarly sources to personal interviews, from the internet to periodicals to books.
Developmental Learning Tools for 3- to 6-month-olds
•  Baby discovers at this stage how much fun his own hands can be now that they’re no longer clenched in a fist.  He can suck his fingers and use them to grasp a toy that has been placed in his hands.
•  Since she has begun to reach for and explore objects, give her safe things of grasping size and different textures to hold.
•  He’ll soon pass a toy back and forth between hands and rotate his wrist to inspect the toy from all sides, then pop it in his mouth.
Consider the following Developmental Learning Tools options (with skills development):
•  TEETHERS – bright objects with various textures and sounds and noises [beware: check for NO phthalates] (visual, fine motor, tactile, auditory)
•  ACTIVITY center – a rack or board with dangling/spinning/rattling objects to bat at, pull, hit, squeak.  This Learning Tool is good until Baby can push up on hands and knees. (tactile, fine motor, gross motor, visual, auditory, thinking/learning)
•  WRIST RATTLES – washable cloth, velcro closure, noisemakers attached; producing, with movement, a happy squeak, beads to shake, a soft touch (tactile, gross motor, visual, auditory, thinking/learning)
•  NOISE-MAKERS – objects offering the sounds of squeeze-and-squeak, whistling, harmonica-sounding, jingling, chirping, clicking, snapping, ringing (tactile, fine motor, auditory, visual, thinking/learning)

The Good Nite Lite
A patent pending, behavioral modification device designed to promote a child’s ability to get the rest that is critical for healthy development. If a child is in the habit of waking up at a certain time, they will tend to continue this regular pattern until it is reset. Unfortunately, if the established pattern is to wake up too early, the result is a that a child will become active on their own schedule which interferes with their own healthy sleep pattern and can be a disruptive influence to the entire household particularly Mom and Dad! It can be extremely difficult to modify this pattern without a visual cue that can be easily understood by even very young children. The Good Nite Lite provides exactly this behavioral cue with its easily distinguished display of the Moon, meaning, “time to rest” and Sun display meaning “time to get up!”.

THE WATER WHISPERER SWIM SCHOOL
OPENS APRIL 1st IN NEW WOODLAND HILLS LOCATION AND OPENED MARCH 1st in SHERMAN OAKS!!! The Water Whisperer is where babies, children and adults learn to swim in a creative, nurturing and peaceful environment. They teach individuals to swim using gentle, developmental methods tailored to each person. Last summer, Emily and her team helped my then 4 yr olds, who were very afraid of the water, get excited about being in the water/swimming in just 10 lessons. Not only do swimmers develop water safety skills, but they also create their own swimming style. They have a 98% success rate in getting children ages 3 and over swimming within ten lessons. The technique was developed by a Jen’s List member, Emily Cohen, who has a Masters Degree in Education from UCLA as well as years of experience teaching children both in and out of the water.  The W.W. is a proud member of The United States Swim School Association and they keep current with all of the Association’s swim teaching techniques. They also recently expanded to Woodland Hills!  Spots are filling up quickly in both locations. Contact emily@thewaterwhisperer.com for Sherman Oaks location and Courtney at bubbles@thewaterwhisperer.com for Woodland Hills!  WATCH THE VIDEOS, READ THE TESTIMONIALS and register at www.thewaterwhisperer.com.
