Play and Grow Smart-er Tips
Nancy Pyne-Hapke, author of Play and Grow Smart, A Guide Supporting Brain Development, Birth through Five, has been giving tips to aid your child’s optimum skill development through proactive neuroscience-based activities every Monday.  These ideas come from scholarly sources to personal interviews, from the internet to periodicals to books.
MORE DEVELOPMENTAL TIDBITS ABOUT 3-YEAR-OLDS
·  Interested in perfecting gross motor skills, Toddler may spend the entire morning going down the slide or riding a favorite tricycle.
·  Notice the change in seasons, take a walk in the neighborhood, go to the library, visit the zoo (see the animals in action) or go grocery shopping.  Talk about everything you see.
·  Build your “learning Library” by choosing Developmental Learning Tools designed to “grow” as children grow, that have features and developmental skill elements appealing to different ages simultaneously all in one object or toy.  This way, Baby learns developmentally at 6 months old with an item, and at 3 years old, Toddler is ready for different features of the same object or toy.
CONSIDER THE FOLLOWING DEVELOPMENTAL LEARNING TOOLS OPTIONS FOR 3-YR-OLDS, PT. 3:
 ·  GARDENING toys – watching plants grow is fun, real life and science!  Let her plant seeds in soil; water and watch them grow.  With a child-sized set, Toddler learns about time and patience – and sees beautiful flowers bloom.  Use tools shaped for small grips (about 7″).  (tactile, visual, gross motor, fine motor, social emotional, life skills, creativity, visual, language/vocabulary, thinking/learning)
·  4-PIECE, 6-piece, 9-piece Puzzles – Did you know that piecing puzzles helps him build important pre-math and pre-reading skills?  As Toddler creates a complete puzzle from the sum of its parts, he builds skill at pattern recognition and using visual cues.  The challenges grow as the pieces grow.  Farm animals, sea creatures, birds, modes of transportation, and zoo animals are familiar pictures. (fine motor, life skills, creativity, visual, language/vocabulary, thinking/learning)

Premature or underweight newborns can have problems maintaining body temperature
Unfortunately, proper incubators aren’t available or affordable everywhere. The Embrace is an infant warmer that costs less than 1 per cent of the price of a traditional incubator, according to the eponymous non-profit currently trialing it in India. It looks like a tiny sleeping bag, and is powered by a small electrical element or hot water.
