Play and Grow Smart-er Tips
Nancy Pyne-Hapke, author of “Play and Grow Smart, A Guide Supporting Brain Development, Birth through Five,” has been giving tips to aid your child’s optimum skill development through proactive neuroscience-based activities weekly on Jen’s List since 2010. These ideas come from scholarly sources to personal interviews, from the internet to periodicals to books.
“MATH/LOGIC” developmental skill definition: recognizing and understanding cause-and-effect relationships, forming and understanding concepts, matching, classifying, categorizing, reasoning, problem-solving, strategizing, organizing ideas.
THE CRITICAL WINDOW during which the circuits of the brain are being most heavily wired for Math/Logic development is 1 – 4 years old. The more opportunity children have to experience healthy, positive and nurturing Math/Logic experiences during this critical period, the more efficiently their brains will work over the long run.
A FEW DEVELOPMENTAL LEARNING TOOLS (toys and other objects) for Math/Logic development: water, sand, objects that can be taken apart and put back together, toys involving problem-solving, games, clay, objects involving counting forward and backward, toys with various shapes/colors/sizes, blocks, puzzles, objects that can be matched/classified/categorized, objects that nest.
SOME PRO-ACTIVE Parent-Supervised MATH/LOGIC Activities, 12 – 24 months:
*  FROM 12 MONTHS,
    .. zipping and unzipping is great fun –
        – “open.. close.. open.. close..”
        – “left.. right.. left.. right..”
    .. help Baby practice fine motor skills of pouring and
      squeezing with sponges and plastic (measuring?)
      cups; never leave him alone in the tub.
    .. count, count, count
        – fingers
        – toes
        – socks; anything!
    .. name, name, name
        – “dog”
        – “airplane”
        – “tree;” everything!
*  FROM 18 MONTHS,
    .. as Toddler is beginning to understand simple
      concepts like space and dimension, she can
      probably put together a basic 2-piece puzzle.
    .. help him build with shoe boxes.
    .. she’s more and more aware of cause and effect,
      i.e. touching a red button creates light and sound.
    .. put a small ball on the high chair tray, and teach
      him how to blow to make it move (practice for
      blowing out birthday candles!).
