Play and Grow Smart-er Tips
Nancy Pyne-Hapke, author of ‘Play and Grow Smart, A Guide Supporting Brain Development, Birth through Five,’ has been giving tips to aid your child’s optimum skill development through proactive neuroscience-based activities every Monday.  These ideas come from scholarly sources to personal interviews, from the internet to periodicals to books.
LEARNING TO READ, PART 2
·  IMPORTANT: If you spend time reading every day, and if, compared to peers, your child is at the “switch not turned on yet” end of the ready-to-read bell curve, don’t despair.  He’s not slow or lazy, he’s just not ready.  When Mother Nature turns the switch on, you’ll know right away!    Please be patient – the NEED to learn to read early comes not from your child but from social pressure, the academic institutions (for high-rating testing scores), and ‘teach-your-6-month-old-to-read’ opportunistic/exploitative companies.  If Mother Nature’s switch is not turned on, have a talk with your child’s school to foster positive self-esteem and to minimize teacher/school expectations.  And realize that if YOU are anxious about your child not reading when you think he ‘should,’ you may pass on those feelings and make him anxious, too – his anxiety won’t make him read any sooner!
·  There is REAL value in turning a book’s physical pages and reading together.  (tactile, auditory, visual, language/vocabulary, social/emotional, fine motor, creativity, life skills, thinking/learning)
The following skills and strategies will help your child build a strong foundation as an emerging reader.  Read with your children!
THE FIRST SET OF SKILLS NEEDED TO BE SUCCESSFUL AT READING/LITERACY ARE AWARENESS OF MEANING, PATTERN, RHYTHM AND LANGUAGE.
To read, a child will
·  LOOK for similarities between what she’s just read and her own lives or other books.
·  DISCUSS what’s really taking place in the story and between the words and pictures.
·  RETELL/build understanding of the story or rhyme by telling it again in his own words or by acting it out.
·  JOIN IN and repeat phrases, and remember parts of the text to encourage prediction skills.
·  TUNE IN to the rhythms and patterns in the text and build on the read-aloud experience by humming, singing along, reading with expression and noticing patterns like the repeated refrain (GOOD NIGHT, MOON).
·  PREDICT or guess what the book is about, what happens next, and how it ends.
·  Next week – “Critical Skills to Learn to Read, Part 3”  Any ?s – email msmarm@roadrunner.com

Is your negative body image causing feelings of isolation and helplessness?
Do you have days where your thoughts are consumed by what you ate previously and self-imposed rules about what you should and shouldn’t eat at any given time?
Do you hold the belief that if only you were able to get control over what you eat and lose weight, you will finally be happy?
Dr. Michelle Gold and Andrea Mendelsohn, MFT, are licensed clinicians with extensive experience helping women to understand their preoccupation with weight, body-image and food. In this group focused on transforming women’s relationship with food, you will be exploring the underlying beliefs that have created and perpetuated this battle. You will be examining what drives emotional eating with the goal of transforming your relationship with food. You will be discussing the extraordinary work of Geneen Roth (author of Women, Food and God), who has developed practical principles which can free you from emotional eating. Throughout this 8 week process, you will be discussing how we all possess remarkably good reasons to turn to food when we are not hungry. The hope is to instill the belief in you that change is possible. With compassion and patience, the facilitators will provide a confidential and safe environment for this important work to unfold.
8 Week Session – $320($40 a session)

Safety Tip of the Week
If you are ever in an emergency situation, and have dialed 911 and are placed on hold, do not hang up. If you are dialing from a normal land line, whether or not you are able to speak, the police can retrieve the address and will still respond. While we’re on the topic, dialing 911 from a cell phone will first be connected to the CHP – – NOT your local police department. The CHP determines the nature of the emergency then connects you to your local 911 – – causing valuable time to be lost. Whenever possible, use a land line when dialing 911.
