Play and Grow Smart-er Tips
Nancy Pyne-Hapke, author of Play and Grow Smart, A Guide Supporting Brain Development, Birth through Five, has been giving tips to aid your child’s optimum skill development through proactive neuroscience-based activities every Monday.  These ideas come from scholarly sources to personal interviews, from the internet to periodicals to books.  
DEVELOPMENTAL TIDBITS ABOUT 5-year-olds, Part 1
·  Now is when play becomes discovery, and Kindergartener learns rapidly through play.
·  Vocabulary expands by learning about color and size through play activities.
·  Learning the differences in how things feel, look and sound helps her develop cognitive skills.
CONSIDER THE FOLLOWING DEVELOPMENTAL LEARNING TOOLS OPTIONS for 5-year-olds, Pt. 1:
·  LOTTO – a traditional matching game.  Choose a lotto activity that stresses color/pattern/texture/shape recognition to help develop language, reading and writing skills.  Match shapes – find all the circles.  Match objects – find all the objects in the den we sit on.  Match color – find everything that is blue.  Then match shapes of a certain color – find all the red rectangles.  Next match objects of a certain shape of a certain color – find all the long, thin green leaves.  Match how things feel – find things that are smooth/rough, sticky, wet/dry, warm/cold, etc.; try some of these with eyes closed.  Match with boxed games, at your dinner table (silverware, green foods), in your chest of drawers (socks), at the market (can sizes), in your closet (shoes), sights while traveling, etc.  (tactile, fine motor, life skills, creativity, visual, language/vocabulary, thinking/learning)
·  PATTERN/MOSAIC blocks – for pre-reading skills and early geometry concepts, color-match and sort and classify and categorize.  Find blocks to make challenging patterns/mosaics in the tub (water-safe, stick on the tile?) as well as on the table or floor (wood, rubbery, foam).  Develop manual dexterity while offering creative expression.  Under controlled situations with proper planning, even use food (special learning opportunities – why not?! with clean hands, please) with shapes made from ¼” sliced apple, watermelon, Asian pear, banana, jicama, pineapple, fuyu persimmon to stack and design, then eat your shapes!  (tactile, fine motor, creativity, visual, language/vocabulary, thinking/learning)
