Play and Grow Smart-er Tips
Nancy Pyne-Hapke, author of Play and Grow Smart, A Guide Supporting Brain Development, Birth through Five, has been giving tips to aid your child’s optimum skill development through proactive neuroscience-based activities every Monday.  These ideas come from scholarly sources to personal interviews, from the internet to periodicals to books.
More Developmental Tidbits about 3-year-olds
 · Teach Toddler various body movements as she learns about different animals – rabbits or frogs (hopping), snakes (wiggling, birds (tiptoeing), ducks (waddling), deer (running) and horses (galloping).
·  Sharing nature and the community, conduct simple science activities like magnetic attraction, freezing water, planting seeds, making a terrarium and flying kites on a windy day.
·  Contain creative artwork in places easy to clean up.  Taping paper to the tabletop keeps creations in place and makes for easier cleanup.  Put up artwork at Toddler’s eye height and rotate every week or so.  (You don’t have to keep every piece of ‘art’ he produces – when you change the artwork from the front of the fridge or cabinet door, save only 1 masterpiece – there will be more next week.)
Consider the following Developmental Learning Tools options for 3-year-olds, Pt. 2:
·  BOOKS – offer 3 kinds of stories: ones that model healthy family roles and relationships which relate them to the bigger world; familiar stories, but add something silly – let Toddler catch your mistakes and tell you the way it should be; and the stories and rhymes you remember from your childhood (nursery thymes, lullabies, poems and stories).  (fine motor, social/emotional, life skills, creativity, visual, auditory, language/vocabulary, thinking/learning)
·  ART supplies – assemble non-toxic/washable items in a plastic lunchbox.  Choose fat primary crayons (best for fine motor control), watercolors, clay, collage basics (magazines, newspapers), construction paper, tempera and finger paints.  (tactile, fine motor, gross motor, social/emotional, life skills, creativity, visual, language/vocabulary, thinking/learning)
·  Next week – “Developmental Learning Tools for 3-yr-olds, Pt. 3”  Any ?’s – email msmarm@roadrunner.com
