Play and Grow Smart-er Tips

Nancy Pyne-Hapke, author of Play and Grow Smart, A Guide Supporting Brain Development, Birth through Five, has been giving tips to aid your child’s optimum skill development through proactive neuroscience-based activities every Monday.  These ideas come from scholarly sources to personal interviews, from the internet to periodicals to books.

Developmental Tidbits about 3-year-olds

 •  Playing with other children is essential, and Toddler begins practicing waiting her turn, manners and sharing, how to cooperate, and the importance of friendship.

•  Increasingly imaginative, giving him clothes and props for pretend play (a cardboard box can be a wagon, rocket or castle) will help encourage his imagination.

Consider the following Developmental Learning Tools options for 3-year-olds, Pt. 1:

•  WATER play – A tub/shower basketball hoop and mesh bag with balls keeps bath toys tidy.  For bath, backyard or beach, show physics concepts of gravity and volume with sponges (the bigger the better), water-tight balls, colorful plastic containers (i.e. measuring cups, take-out containers) and sand/water wheels containing a closable funnel and different wheels that turn based on the direction of the flow of sand or water.  (tactile, fine motor, gross motor, life skills, creativity, visual, language/vocabulary, thinking/learning)

•  BALLS – Give Toddler good times with a large (about 8” and squooshy) ball to develop both throwing and catching.  Balls with texture offer more success than smooth balls.  (tactile, gross motor, fine motor, creativity, visual, thinking/learning)

•  SILLY music – Twist a familiar song: substitute her name, an object, a familiar place.  “Lulu Johnson Had a Little Lamb” or “Mary had a Little Dog.”  Check your book/music store/library for zany songs.  (social/emotional, creativity, auditory, music, language/vocabulary, thinking/learning)

•  Next week – “Developmental Learning Tools for 3-yr-olds, Pt. 2”  Any ?’s – email msmarm@roadrunner.com

Monarch Academy for Young Children in Valencia

Referred by Jens List member ndks@aol.com

“It is the most progressive, developmental, nurturing environment I have ever seen. There are low teacher to student ratios. All these enrichment classes are included – Ms. Moira from Sing, Sign and Play and the Little School of Music and Pilates Pros are all at the school teaching these enrichment classes. The children are learning Spanish, Gardening, Cooking and all the other socialization stuff that I have had to pay extra for in the past. Great with families and very accommodating! The teachers are highly educated and we feel like we have an extended family at school! Even the food is amazing that the kids eat and the cost is included in the tuition!“

I just finished up a huge project organizing my pictures with Shelly!  She scanned in my photos, uploaded all my pictures to an online site, and made me fantastic photo books!  All I did was give her my pictures slightly organized by event, and a basic idea of the theme I wanted and she did the rest!  I also gave her a jumpdrive of more current digital pictures to do the same   I highly recommend her Shelly heartshelly@mac.com or cell 818 359 8206.”
