Nancy Pyne-Hapke, author of Play and Grow Smart, A Guide Supporting Brain Development, Birth through Five, has been giving tips to aid your child’s optimum skill development through proactive neuroscience-based activities every Monday. These ideas come from scholarly sources to personal interviews, from the internet to periodicals to books.
Tidbits about 30- to 36-month-olds
• By the time Toddler reaches his 3rd birthday, he’ll be ready for more challenging toys. After all, if he can put on his own t-shirt, wash and dry his own hands, and brush his own teeth, he can certainly manage blocks and even paint with a brush, use crayons and chalk.
• Most 3-year-olds can also draw a vertical line, which means now’s the perfect time to open a display gallery on the fridge.
• Creatively, dramatic play expands to being aware of everyday life, like food shopping, telling time and housekeeping.
Consider the following Developmental Learning Tools (toys and other objects) options:
• PUPPETS/role playing – she can be anything! Expressing feelings, replaying life’s scenarios and imaginative play are on the path to becoming socialized. (fine motor, gross motor, social/emotional, life skills, creativity, auditory, language/vocabulary, thinking/learning)
• LACING/threading – Fine motor practice (on a lace with a long, firm tip) stringing large colorful beads or giant pegs (with holes all the way through), sequencing and creating color patterns are eye-hand coordination, pre-math and pre-reading practice, all at once. (tactile, fine motor, gross motor, creativity, visual, thinking/learning)
• CHILD-sized picnic set/other child-sized daily-living objects and tools – imagination and realism cross (fine motor, gross motor, creativity, visual, language/vocabulary, life skills, thinking/learning)
