PlayandGrow Smart-er Tips
Nancy Pyne-Hapke, author of Play and Grow Smart, A Guide Supporting Brain Development, Birth through Five, has been giving tips to aid your child’s optimum skill development through proactive neuroscience-based activities every Monday.  These ideas come from scholarly sources to personal interviews, from the internet to periodicals to books.
DEVELOPMENTAL LEARNING TOOLS for 18- to 24-month-olds
•  Toddler is becoming more excited about independence but is constantly being reminded of his own limits.  So while he insists on doing something “Myself!” one moment, the next might find him turning to you for help.
•  The way she learns what she can do is by getting her hands into everything.  She fiddles with knobs, opens/shuts doors, flips light switches on/off – it’s enough to drive you nuts.  Toys with interlocking parts, pop-up toys, matching/sorting toys, cars (with gears) that zoom and horns that honk create endless opportunities to explore and push limits while keeping her away from the light switch.
Consider the following Developmental Learning Tools options (with skills development):
•  SHAPE-SORTING/matching – explore square/round, yellow/blue/red, knife/fork/spoon, big/little, high/low, in/out.  Discuss similarities and differences – opportunities are everywhere! (fine motor, life skills, creativity, visual, language/vocabulary, thinking/learning)
•  BOOKS – read books with new words/with prominent illustrations that matches text with stories that have familiar objects and predictable plots (fine motor, social/emotional, life skills, creativity, visual, auditory, language/vocabulary, thinking/learning)
•  HAMMER and Bang – satisfying constructive hitting on a color-matching toy builds eye-hand coordination (tactile, gross motor, social/emotional, creativity, visual, auditory, thinking/learning)
Next week – “Developmental Learning Tools for 18- to 24-month-olds, Pt. 2”  Any ?’s – email msmarm@roadrunner.com

JUNE Annual Sales
Change or clean all the filters on air conditioners.  These should be cleaned at least once a month in hot weather.  You should have your central AC cleaned and examined by service company.  NOTE: Find an established company with a good reputation. Avoid new companies that have no track record.
Raise the temperature of the AC; You will save about 5% for every degree you raise your thermostat over 70 degrees. Most people find they are quite comfortable at 75 degrees inside instead of 70. It is also less of a shock to your body to go outside into the hot air if the temperature in the house is not very cold. Air out your basement – this is a good time to prevent mold and rot from taking over.
If your car has not been tuned in six months, get it tuned before summer travel.
TYPICAL ANNUAL SALES: Electronics, summer sporting goods also early summer clothes.
MAJOR PURCHASES TYPICALLY ON SALE: Furniture, mattresses.
FRUITS AND VEGETABLES: Apples, apricots, asparagus, bananas, bermuda onions, blackberries, blueberries, cabbage, cantaloupe, celery, cherries, corn, cucumbers, green or wax beans, green onions, lemons, limes, lettuce, nectarines, okra, peas, pineapples, plums, raspberries, radishes, rhubarb, strawberries, squash, tomatoes, watercress, watermelon.  NOTE: With some produce now available all during the year, many people have forgotten when fruits and vegetables are really fresh. Buying in season means that these items are often cheaper, fresher and that money may be going to local farmers

COVERPLAY
The first ever slipcover/liner for play yards.  We all know they get very filthy and are not that pleasant to look at. COVERPLAY eliminates both those problems. It comes in its own travel bag and is much easier to take with you instead of dragging your play yard around.  See www.coverplayard.com
to understand the product more.  This is a very useful product especially since most of the travel industry has switched over to play yards and who would want to place their child in one of those dirty old things?

Out to lunch
Organic juice boxes and seven-grain almond butter sandwiches are a start. But don’t pat yourself on the back, yet Mother Earth: Lunch box waste makes up 3.5 billion pounds of garbage every year. Maybe it’s time you moved your brood into Lunchopolis. Each adorably modern (and lead-free) insulated lunch box comes in a choice of three colors (lime, pink polka dots, and water) with a matching — and reusable — bottle and four stacking containers. Your kids are stylishly fed, lunch box waste is eliminated, and your ecofriendly reputation remains intact. Just like that. See? Who says there was no such thing as a garbage-free lunch?
