Today in History
·         Armed Forces Day – Third Saturday in May
This is simply a day to salute sharply to all of the men and women in all branches of the service who protect our country and you. They can be called upon at a moment’s notice to perform a risky and perilous mission for freedom and country. They train diligently both physically and mentally so they will be prepared to prevail in any mission they face. Just how did it all begin? Well, each branch of the military had their own day of celebration. But, on August 31, 1949 then Secretary of Defense Louis Johnson announced the creation of Armed Forces Day. President Harry Truman also announced the holiday in a presidential proclamation on February 20, 1950. All branches of the military were asked to celebrate on this day and they complied on the first Armed Forces Day which was held the following year on May 20, 1950
·         “And They’re Off!” as the first Kentucky Derby is held at Churchill Downs. (1875)

PlayandGrow Smart-er Tips
Nancy Pyne-Hapke, author of Play and Grow Smart, A Guide Supporting Brain Development, Birth through Five, has been giving tips to aid your child’s optimum skill development through proactive neuroscience-based activities every Monday.  These ideas come from scholarly sources to personal interviews, from the internet to periodicals to books.
Developmental Learning Tools for 12- to 18-month-olds
•  Toddler is really taking off these days – and as you chase her little body down the street, you may miss the days before she learned to use her legs so well.  “Active” is an apt way to describe her now, and she likes any toy or game that allows her to throw her whole self into it – balls, swings and push and pull toys, to name a few
•  His hands are becoming more coordinated, and he can now use toy sorters more efficiently, build even greater block towers and scribble a drawing.  He experiments more with “What happens if I drop this ball?” or “What happens if I pull this lever?”
Consider the following Developmental Learning Tools options (with skills development):
•  PUSH toys – get weighted/well-balanced ones w/noises from wheels (gross motor, creativity, visual, auditory, thinking/learning)
•  TOY telephone – realistic-looking, interactive with buttons that ring/beep/“hello” (fine motor, social/emotional, life skills, creativity, language/vocabulary, thinking/learning)
•  POP-up clown – cause-and-effect excitement/laughter (fine/gross motor, creativity, visual, auditory, thinking/learning)
•  SORTING/nesting toys – early problem-solving, big/small, in/out, color matching (fine/gross motor, creativity, visual, thinking/learning)
Next week – “Developmental Learning Tools for 12-mo- to 18-mo-olds, Pt. 2”  Any ?’s – email msmarm@roadrunner.com

Their goal is to improve employee motivation, focus and concentration, create a sense of sustained energy, and improve corporate productivity. Have difficulty or discomfort seeing 3D movies?
It can be an indication of vision problems that can interfere with learning, sports, driving, etc. A screening test you can do while in the theater is to look at the screen with both eyes open vs. one eye closed. If the picture doesn’t look completely 3D and popping out at you when you have both eyes open, there’s a problem. Also, while you are both wearing the 3D polarized glasses, look at the person you came to the theater with. If one of their eyes looks “black”, and you cannot see both eyes, then you are only looking out of one eye. The other eye may be lazy, amblyopic, or need prescription lenses.
