Today in History
* John Deere produces the first steel plow.  (1833)
* The Yale lock is patented. (1851)
* The Paris Exposition opens with the just completed Eiffel Tower as it’s centerpiece. (1889)
* The Dirigible Hindenburg explodes into flames at Lakehurst, NJ. (1937)
* Chunnel linking England & France officially opens. (1994)
* National Teacher’s Day : Tuesday of the first full week of May
Everybody who does something good, important, and valuable deserves a day in their honor. Teachers certainly are among the more deserving. This day honors those hard working, patient and understanding people whom we entrust our children to. Teachers mold our kids in a positive direction, and affect who they are and who they become. From Kindergarten through college, teachers are an important part of our children’s lives. If you happen to be a teacher reading this, we personally offer our thanks, for the future of America is in your hands.
It’s also No homework Day and Leo Leonni’s (Swimmy) birthday.

“I Can’t Wait to Meet You”
A unique childrens’ book that helps parents explain how their children were conceived through In VItro Fertilization(IVF). Roughly 1 out of every 6 couples of the reproductive age is in need of assisted reproduction. That is 7.3 million people in the United States alone. The simple prose and light hearted pictures make the concept of IVF possible for children to grasp. “I Can’t Wait to Meet You” is the place where Biology and love intersect.
How Safe Is Your Home?
You have to remember that the Internet is like a giant city in the middle of the world with lots of places to go and lots of people in those places.  Are your kids wandering the dark streets of the net or chatting with total strangers?  They may be, from Club Penguin to Facebook to Formspring to Chatroulette, there are rules about socializing online!  While technology is a powerful resource it has it’s pitfalls.  Lori Getz, M.A., (frequent guest on TODAY, Dr. Phil, CNN Headline News, and The Ryan Seacrest Show) will be discussing the “Truth about the Internet” so that you feel empowered to have appropriate discussions about PRIVACY, CYBER-BULLYING, SOCIAL NETWORKING and PREDATORS.
Thursday, May 6th @ 7 p.m. at Agoura Hills High School
Free Admission(this session is for adults only and is not appropriate for children)

1st annual Perinatal Depression Awareness Month in Sacramento
Launched on May 3, 2010,  State Public Affairs Committee of the Junior Leagues of California and Assembly member Pedro Nava. In California, there are nearly 550,000 new and expectant mothers annually. Because approximately 15% of all women experience postpartum depression after the birth of a child and up to 10% will experience depression and anxiety during pregnancy, Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorders are a significant health issue and need to be taken seriously. Unfortunately, the majority of these illnesses go undiagnosed and untreated which can result in long term challenges for the baby and the entire family. However, with diagnosis and treatment, the prognosis for Perinatal Depression is very good. The message, “Speak Up When You Are Down”, conveys a hopeful message, there is help. For access to local resources, caring support or information, contact Postpartum International at www.postpartum.net or 1.800.994.4PPD or the Los Angeles County Perinatal Mental Health Task Force at www.lacountyperinatalmentalhealth.org

LA Diaper Drive
Five years ago, Caroline Kunitz co-founded LA Diaper Drive, an all-volunteer charity that provides diapers to low-income families in the Los Angeles area. Through her hard work and dedication, LA Diaper Drive has been a great success, and I hope that you will help to support this charity by clicking on the link below and making a donation. Mother’s Day is May 9th and I am asking you to make a difference in the lives of low-income mothers by making a tax-deductible donation to LA Diaper Drive. LA Diaper Drive is able to purchase diapers at an extreme discount, so just $120 will provide diapers for one baby for almost a year. If you can afford more, great; if you can afford less, we’ll take what you can give. Every dollar counts. The diapers not only relieve financial pressure from the parents, they are used as incentive to take parenting, life skills, GED prep, or other valuable classes that improve lives and promote safe and healthy families. Check out the video on the front page of her website to see the charity in action.

California Poison Control System
CPCS is dedicated to providing information and 24-hour help in case of poisoning by calling the CPCS at 1-800-222-1222 for advice.  Pharmacists, nurses, physician-toxicologists and poison information providers are available 24 – 7 to help.  In most cases, poison exposure can be safely managed at home with the help of a CPCS poison center expert.  This avoids a call to 911 or a costly visit to a crowded hospital emergency room.  Many parents think about contacting the poison control services only in case of an emergency, but experts are available to answer questions any time.  Brochures, magnets, telephone stickers and materials in 10 languages can be requested by going to www.calpoison.org

Live-In Nanny Lead from a Jens List member
“We had to give up our live-in nanny do to our needs shifting as our kids are getting older.  It’s only been two days, and we already miss her so much because she was amazing with our three kids.  Olivia is an wonderful nanny who loved our kids as if they were her own.  She is very intelligent, honest and responsible and took such wonderful care of our twins boys and our daughter. She is speaks English & does not drive.  She is flexible, but she lived in Tuesday thru Saturday night.  She would come Monday night and go to the bus on Sunday morning.  Any family would be so lucky to have Olivia with them.  She was definitely part of our family for over two years.  You can call Olivia directly at (818) 748-7281 or call Jen at (310) 500-9626 for a reference”.
