Today in History
·         Cinco de Mayo Day
On May 5, 1862, the Mexican army defeated the French army at the Battle of Puebla. This single military battle signified defeat of a European colonial power and a victory for the Mexican people. This single battle was the roots of Cinco de Mayo. Cinco de Mayo is not the celebration of Mexican Independence which is celebrated on September 16th. What Cinco de Mayo has come to be is much more than one battle in the colonial history of Mexico. It is a time of song, dance, partying, and in general a time to be proud to be of Hispanic descent.
·         North Bend, Ohio gets on the map. It’s the site of the fist US train robbery (1865)
·         The New York Stock Exchange crashes, causing the “Great Panic of 1893”. (1893)
·         Alan Shepard rides “Freedom 7” to becomes 1st American in space. (1961)
It is also National Cartoonists Day! Celebrate Fun Holidays with activities that can be enjoyed anywhere: http://www.kids-list.com/Blog.aspx?blog=17

The National Bar Association Crump Law Camp
Established by the National Bar Association to provide students entering the ninth through eleventh grades (between the ages of 14 and 17) with an introduction to the American judicial system. The inaugural two-week camp was held during the summer of 2001 at Howard University School of Law through a grant by the Ford Motor Company Fund. Thirty-two students of diverse backgrounds and races descended upon the campus of Howard University where they were introduced to law school and learned some of the skills required to be an effective lawyer. The campers were paired with college and law students, professors, and practicing attorneys to serve as mentors as they continue through high school, college and law school. The camp provides students with an exciting academic and social agenda, which includes field trips in the Washington, DC area. The competitive highlight of the camp is the Evett L. Simmons Mock Trial Competition. The four winners of this competition are invited to the NBA’s Annual Convention. The most telling compliment from campers is the request to return for another summer .
