Play and Grow Smart-er Tips

Nancy Pyne-Hapke, author of “Play and Grow Smart, A Guide Supporting Brain Development, Birth through Five,” has been giving tips to aid your child’s optimum skill development through proactive neuroscience-based activities weekly since 2010. These ideas come from scholarly sources to personal interviews, from the internet to periodicals to books.

“CREATIVITY” involves imagination, ingenuity, invention/originality, creative thinking, dramatic/visual/musical arts.

THE “CRITICAL WINDOW” during which the circuits of the brain are being most heavily wired for CREATIVITY is 1 – 4 years with lifelong expression. The more opportunity children have to experience healthy, positive and nurturing Creative experiences during this critical period, the more efficiently their brains will work over the long run.

FORMS of creativity: 2- and 3-Dimensional ART, Written/Spoken LANGUAGE, MOVEMENT / MUSIC using the body, Imaginative-Pretending FANTASY.

Some general Creativity: ART tidbits:

* FOR OPTIMUM fine motor ease through the first grade, use art tools (crayons, pencils, brushes, etc.) that are FAT to support developmental ‘fine motor’ ability. “Regular-sized” crayons will break with the strength and lack of refinement of little hands and fingers, may get lost or be underfoot, and cause frustration. Search Jen’s List for “easy DIY crayons” choosing Nov. 10 newsletter for making “new” crayons from broken pieces.

* REMEMBER: in a non-directed way, offer creative supplies and tools to play with in a safe area. Avoid making “art” examples for your child to copy since he learns more by working out expressing his own ideas (which are endless), and adult-induced results can actually hinder learning and healthy self-expression.

Next week – “Creativity: Art, pt. 5”

How might overeating be learned in infancy?

Study reports that babies predominantly fed formula were 2.5 times more likely to become obese toddlers than babies who were breastfed for the first 6 months. Putting babies to bed with a bottle (developing a pattern of eating before sleep), encouraging finishing the whole bottle (developing a pattern denying self-regulation), and adding sweetener to a bottle (developing a habit of expecting/craving sweet foods) can increase the risk of childhood obesity.

Oil Pulling

A new product that contains a blend of sesame oil, sunflower oil, coconut oil, plus peppermint oil & is specifically designed for oil pulling. Oil pulling works to rid the body of toxins that build up from poor diet, environmental factors, sedentary and stressful lifestyles, lack of hydration, etc. These oil soluble toxins get “dumped” into the mouth through the salivary glands, and the pulling oil (which is swished for several minutes and then discarded) takes them out. The result is not only cleaner, whiter teeth and fresher breath.  Many users report systemic changes that range from weight loss to increased energy and decreased pain.
