Smart Dogs Dog Training – A Trained Dog is a Happy Dog

Obedience training is the foundation to communicating with your dog. Once your dog understands what “to do” and knows how to please you, life together is much more enjoyable for all. A “no’ to a trained dog means something, but to an untrained dog it is just an unpleasant sound with little meaning. Smart Dogs offers boarding and lesson basis training for puppies and adults. Many Jen’s list subscribers and their families have had successful results. Call Jeff at (818) 371-1231 to get started.

Play and Grow Smart-er Tips

Nancy Pyne-Hapke, author of “Play and Grow Smart, A Guide Supporting Brain Development, Birth through Five,” has been giving tips to aid your child’s optimum skill development through proactive neuroscience-based activities, now every Sunday.  These ideas come from scholarly sources to personal interviews, from the internet to periodicals to books.

“LIFE SKILLS” DEVELOPMENTAL SKILL DEFINITION: personal care, responsibility, self-reliance, invention, resourcefulness, ingenuity, invention.

THE CRITICAL WINDOWS during which the circuits of the brain are being most heavily wired for LIFE SKILLS is birth to 5 years old.  The more opportunity children have to experience healthy, positive and nurturing life skill experiences during this critical period, the more efficiently their brains will work over the long run.

A FEW DEVELOPMENTAL LEARNING TOOLS (toys and other objects) for LIFE SKILLS:  *  puzzles   *  toy telephone   *  dolls/stuffed animals   *  construction or building toys   *  craft projects   *  investigative toys   *  costumes and props   *  play figures/structures involving 2 or more players

Some general Life Skills tidbits:

**  AS YOU CARRY ON DAILY CHORES, talk about objects around the house.  Show him different uses for the same object – dig with a spoon, eat with a spoon; drink from a container, pour from a container.

**  IN THE CAR, point out things like trees, houses, people walking dogs, cars, big trucks and stop signs.

**  NAME THINGS that are the same/different, bigger/smaller, hot/cold, tall/short, high/low, moving/still, light/dark, noisy/quiet, etc.

**  OFFER CHOICES.  She can tell you if she wants to wear red or blue today or if she wants a banana or a cracker.

**  DURING THE DAY, name items of clothing/colors and count how many (counting and sequencing backward = subtraction, counting and sequencing forward = addition).  Count flowers and leaves, peas and corn kernels, shoes and socks, people at the park (adults and children, boys and girls).

**  WHEN VACUUMING, give him a pretend or child-sized vacuum to copy you; when fixing dinner, let him play with plastic dishes.

I finally know what it means to Eat to Live vs. Live to Eat

Shellee Dyne, located in Calabasas, has helped me make successful diet lifestyle changes, but I wanted to let you know that she is now in Westlake every Monday! All these years, I wasn’t feeding my body what it really needed. I had read & heard about clean eating, but without educating myself, thought it sounds boring & full of deprivation. But I was wrong. While I have lost weight, it’s really more than just a number on the scale. It’s about feeling good, having energy and most important being healthy. If someone would have told me my cravings for sugar would disappear, I seriously would have never believed them. But it has and it’s true. I HIGHLY recommend her. Life changing.

In preparation for cooking (steaming, sautéing, stewing, roasting, stir-frying, braising) or eating raw (shredded in salad, with dip, snacks), cut carrots in coins or slabs, or make ‘flowers’ or sticks or wedges. Organic is best.
