Play and Grow Smart-er Tips

Nancy Pyne-Hapke, author of “Play and Grow Smart, A Guide Supporting Brain Development, Birth through Five,” has been giving tips to aid your child’s optimum skill development through proactive neuroscience-based activities every Sunday.  These ideas come from scholarly sources to personal interviews, from the internet to periodicals to books.

SKILL DEVELOPMENT tidbits, 5-year-olds:

*Kindergartener understands “more,” “less,” and “same.”

*He enjoys showing you things in an order sequence, first to last and last to first, before and after, and up and down and down and up.

*Understanding positions, she’ll demonstrate above and below, and short and tall.

*Build your “LEARNING LIBRARY” by choosing developmental learning tools, designed to “grow” as children grow, with features and developmental skill elements appealing to different ages simultaneously all in 1 toy, so Baby learns developmentally at 3 months with an object and at 2 years, for example, he’s ready for different features of the same toy.

SOME DEVELOPMENTAL LEARNING TOOLS (toys and other objects) for 5-year-olds and the developmental skills utilized:

PATTERN/MOSAIC blocks – for pre-reading skills and early geometry concepts, color-match and sort and classify and categorize.  (tactile, fine motor, creativity, visual, language/vocabulary, thinking/learning)

*Find blocks to make challenging patterns/mosaics in the tub (water-safe, stick on the tile?) as well as blocks for creative patterns/mosaics on the table or floor (wood, rubber-like, foam, plastic).

*Develop manual dexterity (fine motor) while offering creative expression.

*Under controlled situations with proper planning, even use food for matching, sorting, classifying and categorizing — special learning opportunities – why not?!… with clean hands, please.

*Control the juice using lipped cookie sheets or serving trays!

*Use shapes made from ¼” sliced apple, watermelon cubes, Asian pear wedges, banana coins, jicama matchsticks, pineapple rounds, fuyu persimmon slices (sliced horizontally) to stack and design, then eat the shapes!
