Play and Grow Smart-er Tips
Nancy Pyne-Hapke, author of “Play and Grow Smart, A Guide Supporting Brain Development, Birth through Five,” has been giving tips to aid your child’s optimum skill development through proactive neuroscience-based activities every Monday. These ideas come from scholarly sources to personal interviews, from the internet to periodicals to books.
MORE DEVELOPMENTAL TIDBITS ABOUT 4-year-olds
· Introduce early games for taking turns, waiting your turn, following directions, playing cooperatively, problem solving, logic and early math emphasizing color and shape recognition.
· Remember, don’t place too much importance on winning at early games – at this age DOING IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN WINNING.
· Increasingly imaginative, Preschooler creates his own story lines, characters, plots and adventures.
CONSIDER THE FOLLOWING “DEVELOPMENTAL LEARNING TOOLS’ OPTIONS FOR 4-year-olds, Pt. 2:
· ABCs and 123s – Play early games, match upper/lower case letters to build pre-reading skills. (tactile, fine motor, life skills, creativity, visual, auditory, language/vocabulary, thinking/learning)
· PLAY SCHOOL with write-on/wipe-off reusable activity cards which break down letters/numbers into patterns he recognizes: circles and lines. (Use fat primary writing tools as Preschooler will have more success in his fine motor experiences than with ‘regular-sized’ crayons/pencils.) (tactile, fine motor, life skills, creativity, visual, auditory, social/emotional, language/vocabulary, thinking/learning)
· SING SONGS – Make up your own, emphasizing words starting with the same sound. i.e. “♪ Sammi sat on the sofa with Celia. ♫” (auditory, language/vocabulary, life skills, creativity, thinking/learning)
· THROWING THINGS is very important – ball toss, basketball, pitching practice for balance, movement, whole-body coordination. Rearrangeable/piece-movable ring toss with numbered bases (numeric progression) – distance, placement, accuracy. Underhanded beanbag toss to targets – eye-hand coordination, depth perception, aim. (tactile, gross motor, fine motor, visual, language/vocabulary, thinking/learning)
